Oil filter o-ring: wrong one, or operator error?

Howdy, all.
I could have sworn I posted this already, but I can't find it now. When I changed the oil filter in my Super A I also replaced the o-ring with the one provided with the cartridge. I did a thorough job of cleaning out the old o-ring residue out of the groove. However, it seems to seep oil when the tractor is running. Did I install it wrong, over-tighten, or do these always seep a little?? (The groove is triangular, whereas the o-ring is square in cross-section... is that right??)

Thanks again,
Darren

Triangular groove? NO NO NO. Sounds like you still have the old ring stuck in the groove. The groove is square to match your new 0-ring. Those old rings can be very hard as another poster mentioned.

I"ve noticed the after market oil filters always come with the new seal ring, the OEM filters do not and you are forced to buy it at extra cost if you go that route.

How deep is the groove supposed to be in the oil filter housing. Mine is also leaking and there may be extra gaskets.

I had a leak once, cleaned it all up real good. put in another o-ring and it still leaked. Took a small flat screw driver and started going around the grove and dug out three old o-rings. When it's cleaned out the o-ring fits nice down it the grove and it won't leak.

You guys that never change the o-ring gasket are asking for trouble just like Darren has encountered. Sooner or later, the old gasket will leak, and then you will have a lot of fun trying to get that hard as iron rubber o-ring out of the groove. Doesn't the new filter come with a new o-ring each time?

The Napa Gold filters come rith rubber sealing ring. I replace the seal with each filter change, no leaks :)

Sounds like you didn't get the groove clean. The O-ring and the groove are square in cross-section.
I always replace the O-ring on those engines when I change the filter. Haven't had a leak yet.

I have an H and it uses a square packing/square cut ring also. In response to the earlier post of maybe an old one still in there. I think it is a definite possibility. I would take it apart and take a small screwdriver or even better a o-ring pick and scratch around in the groove. A metal tool scratching on metal has a definite sound and feel. Good luck. Your new ring that came with the filter should fit and seal.

I seldom replace the "O" ring. A new one seems to be more likely to leak than the old one is.

I agree with Bob, You may still have another seal in the square groove....

I could be wrong about this, but I don't recall the groove being "triangular". You may still have an old, hard gasket down in the groove from a long-ago filter change.

Oh, boy... That would definitely explain it. I'll get a strong light on it and see what I can find.

Thanks, guys.
Darren
