I am looking at possibly buying an IH 756 gas tractor. I admittedly don't know the first thing about tractors and have a limited about of money to spend. I will use the tractor to set out round bales of hay about 1,000 pounds each and do 2-3 days of mower work in the summer. The tractor I saw today looked like it had pretty good metal no rust or dents but faded or worn paint. It started right up in 30 degree weather with the help of the choke. No noticeable smoke except when it first started. I had a few concerns: 1. I heard a whining noise between the motor and the front step area. The person showing me the tractor explained that this was normal or expected due the cold weather and the tractor needed to have a dirty hydraulic filter changed and showed me the area to take the bolts off to do this. 2. This tractor was set up for quick connect attachments. The person showing me the tractor explained that he could make my 3 point hay spear and mower work by using some old farm implement parts he had that was set up for quick connect. I liked the tractor. The motor sounded strong. The tach showed over 4,000 hours. Main concerns are: does this tractor have a bad hydraulic pump or worse and can this quick connect system work on my 3 point attachments? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Andy: I agree with Paul, have the seller change the filter, may be even the hydraulic oil should it look milky. Then see if the whine goes away. In the area you describe it coming from could be the TA. I would kind of favour a demonstration using all hydraulics and TA just to see how it all performs. Remember these tractors are 30 plus years old by now. A guy like Paul who uses and plans on keeping his takes much better care than the guy that got rid of his. With good maintenance these tractors will go a lot of years yet. Just try not to be playing catch up on someone's poor maintainence.

I dont know much about the gas 756 mine has the german diesel, but I will tell this is the handiest tractor on my farm.It would work exellent for the work you are talking about.Iwould have him change the filters then try it on a warmer day orleave it warm up for a while then make sure the hitch goes up and down smothly and the power steering works good. There are many options with the fast hitch. There are 2 point to 3 point adaptors, you can weld a third arm reciever to the plate on the back of the tractor and put points in the recievers to make it into a 3 point. My gehl bale fork slips right into the fast hitch recievers and that works really slick.
