Are the belt drives on a H and a M the same? If not do they interchange? I'm looking for a belt pulley to put on my SMTA and have found one on a H. Thanks for all comments.

This might be a good time to make another comment about belt pulleys, as far as the H and M are concerned, there are two sizes of pulleys, the bigger one is usually installed on the M, and the smaller pulley goes for the H, but those two could be installed on either tractor. The diameter of the pulley chosen was determined by the machine being powered, and how many feet per minute you needed for belt speed. The larger pulley would give you more feet per minute, but the H might not have enough power to run the machine at this speed.

Rusty, Thanks for that info, I didn't know that. the two I have are from H's, I have seen both sizes but never noticed that the larger one was for a M.
Thanks, Van

Van: For the most part your asumption on big one for M and small for H is correct, however some jobs just required certain speeds and not a lot of power. Often it took the large or small pulley to achive this. Power is a factor but not the only factor.

Van: To you and others, rustyfarmall makes a good point. With any of these changes parts numbers should be checked quite closely. Besides the two sizes of chassis, you have the complete change with TA chassis and then when you get into 460-560, hydraulics are driven from torque tube. I know the pulley speed changed with the TA on the 300. Do some good cross reference work before buying.

No, they are not the same, and will not interchange. I have one for a 39 M that I would sell, but it is rather specific to a 39, I don't think you would want it on a SMTA.

Hugh - Would a pully off a 460 fit? Since the 460 is the same style chassis as the 300 etc.

Van: The pulley itself will be the same, however the gear box will be different. Width of chassis being the difference. I once briefly looked at putting pulley from my 300 on 560. The large chassis of the MTA, 400, 450 and 560 about 3" wider, where gear box bolts down.

Thanks Hugh, I was afraid of that but havent been out to the H graveyard to measure yet and compare bolt hole locations and such. I know the M frame is wider and longer than a H or 300, but I was just hoping that the plate on top of the transmission was the same.

Van: Just a further note to let you know I never compared any part numbers to see exactly what is different. All I did was a visual and measure with the 300 and 560 tractors side by side.

The reason I know the actual pulley will interchange, is my dad had a fibre pulley on H and a neighbor with a Super M used to borrow it for threshing. When dad bought the 300 he had it on 300 a few times. This fibre pulley had come new with W4 in 1942. He bought both the H and 300 new with gear boxes but no pulley. I did pick up a steel pulley at an auction in the mid 60s. Don't quite know why, I'll bet it's never had a belt on it.

Hugh, I have two fiber pulleys in good shape, dont really have a need for the belt pulley to be installed yet, just thought it would look good on the SMTA after the restoration is done.
Its a nice accessory.

Van: You are exactly right, that black fibre pulley will look quite sharp. Good luck in finding what you need. How far away are you? I'm always roaming around old iron just might see one.

Hugh,
I'm in North Central Arkansas close to Lake Norfork and Bullshoals lake. I have a place very close to the Buffalo National River. I guess I'll just keep looking, The pulleys I have came off H's, one is in fair shape and the other one is mint. Just worked a deal for a 1953 Super H that still has original paint on it, and man it looks to be in great shape, must be low hour machine, no shown wear, no rust, paint not faded, always shedded, never rained on, a two owner tractor, while making the deal I almost peed in my pants, it still has original decals on it! What a find!!!!! Seasons Greatings to you and yours.

Van: I live in ON Canada, shipping would kill something like that gear box. I've sent a few light items south, and that cross border shipping kills it. One of those pulleys will look just as sharp on that Super H. Finds like that don't happen often. I guess that is why I never find anything, too fussy.

Van you must be close to Mt. Home, I have delivered auto parts in the middle of the night to Harolds Auto Supply. I don't like that RT. the 1 1/2 hr., it takes to get to Hardy seems like 4 or 5 at 2:00 in the Morn.

Jimmy,
I was raised at Calico Rock and just retired from the AF last year. I live south of Yellville off of Highway 14. My dad used to work at the IH dealership that was at Calico Rock, now Washington Auto Parts, after he retired and sold the farm he moved to Mountain Home and went to work for Harolds Auto Parts part time and worked their on and off until his death. I still buy a lot of parts from them, good people. Small world aint it?
