I just bought a 58 350D and I need some help from you guys that know these tractors 100 times as well as I do. That means most of you out there. The shifter seems loose and I can find 4th and 5th alright but 1st and reverse are almost impossible to get to. Is this a shifter fork problem or what? I have the manuals coming but not here yet. The tractor runs well but steering is loose. It has a wide front with power steering. I know I will have to rebuild that. This is my 1st tractor and I feel like a kid with it. thanks Jerry

Pull your shifter out of the top of your tranny. From the age of the tractor and the loose steering I bet it has a few hours on it and the end of the shifter lever where it contacts the shift dogs are probably almost worn away. You will probably have to get it built up with weld and try to grind it into somewhat resembling what it should be.

I had rather build one up than to have a new one. You can make it just a bit bigger than original. You may have to replace the pin which goes through the lever.

Thanks Mark, I am lucky enough to have a Case dealer in my hometown. But do you think there is a chance any of the parts are available. I can build up the old ones if I have to but I'd rather put in new to make shifting easy. Jerry

Mark - I agree w/FarmallMD - you're unlikely to find a new shifter at your dealer. And if you do it will be spendy. A couple suggestions:

1 - It's simple to fix a worn shift lever end. Takes only a few minutes to build up the button with arc weld, then grind the weld metal into a workable profile. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate either - anything close to the original profile will greatly improve shifting.

2 - On my Super H, difficult shifting was caused by a missing cross pin and a wrong size (too small) pivot pin in the base of the shift lever. Was a simple matter to cut up a couple common bolts to make good replacement parts. The tractor now shifts gears like new. (However your dealer can probably provide these parts new at reasonable cost if needed...)

Thanks for all of your help. I talked to my dealer this afternoon before I got your replies and the parts guy said the shifter was available but the only shifter forks that still were available were for the 4th and 5th gears. I guess that tells which forks were bought the most after production stoped. If I am reading your replies correctly : Sorry lack of brain power showing here; then you are telling me not to be concerned with the forks and my problem should be in just the shifter rod end itself. I hope so as building that up would be easy thanks again Jerry
