Thanks for the responce guys. I bought a set of autolite 386's to try as the red said. I have a hard time spending almost $40 for a set of plugs if tractor will run good without them. My NAPA dealer here told me the 386's were a crossover for the d89d's. Has anyone had any experience running the standard plugs instead of the long ones??? Personally I can't see much of a difference. When the weather warms up here I will give it a shot, -29 here this morning.

I've used regular plugs, they do seem to foul up a lot. Not sure where you are getting the correct plugs, but they used to only be $4 a piece at tractor supply. I always seem to break the middle plugs when removing so I wouldnt say its easy to clean the plugs. maybe no one else has that problem though :) -Greg

I thought about making a comment about removing the plugs, especially the one (No. 2 or 3??) that is behind the manifold and a real chore to get out. I would not consider changing them something I wanted to do more often than necessary. You have to remove the hood and then deal with that one in the middle that is behind the manifold.

For the sake of 4 nuts and a hose clamp, in the past I have just always removed the intake manifold to avoid breaking plugs. Also when i remove the carb for cleaning I always pull the manifold, carb nuts are immpossible to get at too. Not very bright ideas at ih in a time when tractors were suppossed to be almost totally operator serviceable, could you imagine trying to get to work in the fields in the late 40's, early 50's and break a spark plug or two trying to get them out to clean them??? might be a half day trip just to get to town. Bet there has been alot of cussing over the years. not many deep or swivel sockets back then.

Yes, getting the carburetor off is a booger too. Next time I take mine off, I'm going to replace the backside bolts with socket head screws. I found that a 3/8 drive deep socket can get into that spark plug and get it out. The 1/2 inch drive is just too big.

For the difference in price, it's well worth trying the cheaper plugs! I have no experience with them but suspect the only problem is they'll tend to foul more quickly than the D89-D. However you may be able to minimize fouling by switching the engine back to the gas cycle and letting it run a several minutes on gas before shutting down. Also it's not that big a deal to remove and clean (or swap) the plugs in the event they do become fouled.

BobM- Not trying to be a smartaleck or anything here, just curious since I'm just learning about the gas start IH deisels myself, but how would switching it to gas before shutting it down help with the plugs fouling? Isn't when it's running on gas the only time the plugs are working and exposed to combustion? Seems to me that limiting the time it's running on gas would work better. I am aware that these tractors need a cooldown period before shutting them off, but from what I read here lots of people just idle them on deisel before shutting them off. Thanks for any advice!
