Unless this engine burns oil or has low compression I would think you only need a head gasket. My IH truck (466) acted as you discribe and a gasket fixed it. But if you got it very hot (needle pegged in the red) for an extended period, you probably took the temper out of the rings.

The forward air flow cooling used on the 88 series didn't work out as well as IH had hoped but it was still works good as long as you keep the area around the radiator cleaned out. There is a small access panel on the left side just behind the radiator you can take off with 4 bolts after removing the side panel to keep it clean. The radiator may not be cheap to recore but any of those big radiator's are expensive to recore. For the engine kit if you have a Navistar truck dealership close you can get their DT-466 overhaul kit cheaper and CIH just gets their kits from Navistar and puts their name on the box. We just put a CIH reman engine in our 5488 for $4,000, a JD 466 reman engine is over $7,000 so yes the IH engines are cheap to work on. Most other companies went to metric long before IH did.

The 88 series was one of the most sophisticated tractors the IH made. Although the hood may be heck to get off, it was designed so that heat would be pulled off the block and through the top of the hood. Any true IH fan sees it as the last of the breed before the other company had influence on them. The transmission may not have been the greatest on the market at the time, but they are still great tractors worth spending money on.
