This tractor has been running strong (lots of power), then it started running rough. All the normal things were checked such as plugs, wireing, distributer, timing, gap, carb, and then i was told that the governer was bad. I had it fixed but the spring that was broken was replaced by a spring they found on there work bench. My question is, is that spring suppose to have a certian tention and should it have been ordered special? Thanks for any input.

Don't see how the governor spring would cause the engine to run rough.

Sounds more like an intake manifold leak. Using a propane torch, open the valve a little but don't light it. With the engine running move the torch around the manifold if the engine smooths out then you have found your problem.

If this doesn't find the problem then I would take a compression check to see if all of the cylinders are about the same. You might have a stuck valve causing your problem.

GOOD LUCK

I agree with Stan. The governer would not make your c run rough. I had a similar problem on my C and discovered the fuel strainer in the bottom of the gas tank (it is above the sediment bowl) was partially plug with rust. A blast of compressed air back through the gas line cured it short term, but needed to remove the tank and flush well to solve the problem. It could be a lot of other things, but check to see how well the gas flows out of the line to the carb. It should flood out. If not, you have a restriction. Good luck.

If your gov spring broke it wouldn't start running rough, it would refuse to go above low idle no matter what you did with the hand throttle control. And if you went around to the carb and moved the throttle rod from the governor by hand, the engine would rev fine. If the spring they replaced it with was too weak, it would bog down easily and not be able to maintain RPMs, possibly not be able to reach it's normal high idle RPM. The springs are still available from the dealer last time I checked.
