I put D-89Ds in my MD because that's what the book calls for, and it runs great. HOWEVER, I just got my PD-40 running, and it has W-18 standard plugs in it for gas start -- that's what it's manual calls for, and it starts just as easy as my MD. It would be interesting to put D-18s or some other standard plug in an otherwise good running MD or WD-6 and see if it makes any difference in the starting.

I thought the Champion 44 (not sure what it crosses to) is the correct plug for the 40 Diesels, 80 diesels, TD14 & TD18..

I had heard that too.... my PD-40 is a very early one (vertical injector head) so maybe that's why it calls for the W-18s?????

Hi, mind did alot of backfiring until I took off the cap and cleaned it all up and put on new plug wirers with new plugs, I have to fiddle with the choke rod alittle but you can tell when it starts to rev up. Good luck. I bought the D89D plugs and got them at the local Case/IH dealer. Fredwi

The correct plug for the WD6 (same as the MD) is a Champion D89D. I got mine from an IH dealer. However, I asked at NAPA and they did not have them in stock, but could order them. I think Tractor Supply can get them too. I don't think your WD6 will do very well on gas unless you have these plugs in it. As others said, $7 or $8 each. It's a non standard, low volume plug.

I've used Champion D-89D, later number is 543, with success. My local NAPA store orders them, next day delivery. They're salty - maybe $6-$7 a shot, but they work. Good luck.

My 1952 service data shows either a AC 18A, or Auto-Lite BT-15, or Champion 49. I don't know what is the modern equivilent of these plugs. Gap is .020-.025.

The gas-start diesel uses a special, super extended reach plug with the electrodes sticking a good inch or more beyond the threaded shell. If I recall it's either either a Champion W-89D (7/8" thread) or D-89D (18mm thread).

My local TSC had a few of 'em in stock the last time I was there. Not cheap however - recall they were about $7 each.

Since you are not using the spark plugs for very long, I recommend you go with a hotter plug. AC C86 or Champion YD 21 or Autolite 386.
