Well after I got the steering box off and cleaned up I found it leaking at the bottom called the expansion plug. EASY FIX RIGHT?>>>> I noticed some water in the Hytran lines so of course I had to see how bad it was. I can only say>> IF you have had water in your hydraulic system/tranny/power steering>>>YOU HAD BETTER FIND SOME WAY TO FLUSH IT OUT. The inside of the unit was filled with rust and sludge...I can't believe it even worked. Hopefully I can get the parts I need. Most of them cleaned up after bead blasting and solvent. Any way rebuilding the unit isn't to bad ..very messy and time consuming. Definetly a do it your self project.

Actually Ken I figured you would be interested. I will take some picts when I reassemble it...maybe I will even write a little manual...lord knows the ones I have aren't really helping. It was leaking out the bottom expansion plug. Small job turns into big project...still waiting to here about replacement parts.

I have a 460U p/s unit on my 300U. I took quite a few pics when I took it apart, and I don't think they've gotten deleted. The plug on the bottom where yours is leaking is a pretty easy and cheap fix. My output arm shafts were badly worn, I had to have them built up and turned, have bushings made and installed. My total cost was around $400 for the total job. Still plenty cheaper than the $650 or so that a used unit was going for at the time. My pics were taken with a cheap little digital camera, if you want any, drop me a line.

I am hoping to get the whole thing rebuilt using the existing parts...they cleaned up pretty well with bead blasting and repacking everything with grease for under 75.00 I hope...I haven't got the prices or availabilty of some of the seals and parts.

In reply to KEN.If your steering is stiff, start by determining where problem is. Jack front end up; remove drag links;check spindles for binding, worn bushings, etc. While drag links are off check gearbox for binding, worn bushings, etc. If these things checkout O.K. then problem could be in p/s hydraulics.Learned to drive on a 300U some 30 yrs. ago and p/s is somewhat limited by amount of load on front end,i.e. more weight added-more steering effort needed. Then again maybe I've just been spoiled by IH hydrostatic steering. Hope this is of some help.

Ya know>>>maybe you have something wrong inside the unit...I did notice that they used 2 different lengths of arms on the unit. I wonder if this might be a way to correct your problem. By using a differnt length arm you change the leverage to the whell and back through the box. Just a thought

you talking about the arms on the left and right side on the outside,i wnat to think they are different like you say i'll have to look if i get a chance tomorrow,we're getting dumped on right now and sounds like thru the night so might have to scoop snow to even get the door open to look.might even fire it up and move a little while i'm at it.

Those are the arms I am talking about...but I am not refering to a difference between the sides(R vs L) both arms There is a diagram in my book that shows a short SET and a long SET. I think I read it right I'll check it out.

now that i really think about it i want to think they are offset a little like the left one is a little farther forward then the right.
