IH I-404 Needs Work (again)

Sorry to post this again, but this forum had so many posts I already got bumped to page 2 !!!

A friend has a yellow 1963 I-404 gas tractor that has not started for approximately 2 years. He bought it for $100 (while it was broke down) and never started it. It was used for general light work around a horse stables. Now, he and I are going to try to fix it and get it in decent working order.

There was water in the oil. A mechanic friend says he thinks it needs head work, and his opinion is that it's not a cracked block. The block was cracked and welded on the exterior at one time, and I suggested that maybe it's now cracked inside, and that maybe that's where it's getting water. Is there any way to tell?

Will we be able to get head parts and engine rebuild kit parts? How about a reman. block if it needs one? I looked for engine kit parts on this site and it appears there aren;t any.....

Any help and advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance

To check for crack get a special dye used by mechanics for cracks. If there is any cracks it will glow under a florsent light.

Sorry, I forgot to mention two things.

1. It's an International

2. It's got military markings on it. There's a metal ID plate on the inside left fender with lots of information. That's where we got the year and model number. Also, there is military information here too. It appears it may have been made specially for the Army (at Ft Bliss, TX).

Thanks again for any help

Stretch: Your 404 uses the C-135 gas engine. Not one of IH's big production engines, however it was used in 404, 340 and 330 both Farmall and Utility models as well as Industrials. The engine was also used in small combines and swathers, for close to 20 years. Supplies of used parts should be quite good. One item to watch for is different crankshaft was used for various applications. It is different at flywheel end.

I do not know very much about the 404, but I would think that IH did not make a special engine just for this tractor. Do some research and find out what other tractors/power units used the same engine, and you should succeed. There are plenty of salvage yards where you should be able to find what you need.
I am currently working on an I-4, which is the International industrial version of the McCormick W-4. Both of these tractors use the same engine as an H Farmall, but when I look for parts for an I-4, I pretty much find nothing, but go looking for parts for an H, and suddenly everybody has bunches of them. Good luck, and enjoy the hunt.
