Front-wheel drive

I saw a picture not long ago of an IH1586 with front wheel drive. That wasn't a factory option if I remember correctly(someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I've heard of a company called Elwood that supplies these front ends. I wondered if anyone could share some details on this system. Was it a mechanical or hydraulic FWA? If it is mechanical, how does it tie in to the drivetrain? How reliable are these systems (what were some of the problems they experienced)? Are they still available?

At this point I'm just curious to know any specifics. At some point in the future I plan to completely rebuild our farm's IH1086. If there is a reliable front wheel drive system for the 86 series, I might think about incorporating that system during the rebuild. I can't imagine that it wouldn't substantially extend the life of the rearend.

Thanks a lot for any information,
Chad

Hello, You are right that elwood was a common front end on these tractors, but coleman had an mfd that was available as well. The Coleman seems to be obsolete.
The Elwood was a better more nimble unit but the splines on the shafts and any moving piece was notorious for wearing out and failing. Salvage yards may have the parts needed to rebuild them but since the numbers were very limited and it has been 25 years parts would be tough to find and show much wear when you could get them. I have thought often of doing what you propose, but just haven't because of the trouble it would take to assemble everything and get the tractor operational. I hope you do it, it should be fun to watch.

you can still get parts for a elwood front end its a company called four trax but you cant get a new elwood or four trax axle. and it tied into a drop box off the left side of the trans look for a plate on the left side of your tractor shaped like the state of indiana its known as the indiana plate thisd is where the drop drive box goes.

What about a track kit like on the old Fords.
