The tractor I am working on set up for 15 years. The gas turned to varnish. It is about a 1/2" thick in the tank. The tanks have baffel in them which makes it impossible to scrape. What is the best way to clean it?

It might take two applications but fill it with the cheapest vinegar you can find and let it set for 3 or 4 days. Helps if you can slosh it around some each day. If set up too long, you will find some 'new' leaks where the metal was rusted bad. Pour out the old stuff on weeds.

I am using the vinegar and it is working great. The bottom is even shiney.

I have had very good success pouring in a liberal amount of lacquer thinner and sloshing it around. I have also used a piece of chain to help loosen any solids or rust provided you can get it back out without any trouble.

You might try putting some fresh gas in the tank, that should dissolve the tar. Dispose of the gas after, it won't be any good. If you also have rust in the tank, which you most likely do, muriatic acid will clean that up, be very cautious with that stuff. Rinse thoroughly several times with water after cleaning, you don't want any of the acid remaining in the tank.

Get a power washer and putt a turbo nozzle on it , don't hit your foot with it or it will tear your shoe apart.

I tried that method, it doesn't work because of the baffle in the tank.
