How do I go about cleaning the oil sludge in the engine.I took the pan ,valve cover, side panel, oil filter off. Sludge City. Do I attempt to do this or is it better left alone? The service manual said to use gas and light oil 50/50 mix. What is best way to flush it through and will any of the solvent and or sludge do any bearing damage. What kind of oil should be put back in it.I live in a warm climate and it is not going to be used as a working tractor. Thanks to all with any advice.

And replace the thermostat. The engine running cold causes a lot of the sludge, water condenses in the oil and doesn't cook off.

Tom,
you are right .the engine does run cold. I had planned on putting a new thermostat in it .The temp gauge barely moves.thanks

Since you have oil pan, valve cover, and side cover off: Use Kerosene or solvent (better idea is solvent) and a scraper/paint brush/tooth brush to clean away as much as you can.

As far as running it with something to clean it out, this is what I would do: fill with oil, add 1 quart kerosene, new oil filter. Run for 5 to 10 minutes and drain. Re-fill with fresh oil and new filter again, run 30 minutes or more - drain again to remove any left over kerosene or junk. Re-fill with fresh oil.

If you don't think you can get all the sludge out, simply use 30 weight NON-detergent oil. A detergent oil will break the sludge loose, possibly clogging oil passages.

This is just an opinion on what I would do.
