Thinking of purchasing an Md 1948. While driving should you be able to take off in High gear from a standing start. It seems to me their is not enough trottle on this tractor. Just wondering? Seem it does not throttle up very much or does it need a load on it to accomplish this in low gears?

Fifth gear is direct, meaning you have no gear reduction between the engine and differential, so the H,M, etc are rather slow to take off in 5th, particularly if the engine is not warmed up, on an incline, or pulling a load.

She should start out in 5th just like a gas M. The
fuel system may be in need of a tune up. There are
a number of things that could be wrong. If you buy it get a manual and an owners manual both have the answers to geting her back to running at top performance. Good luck Geoff

And if you're on an up-slope, or with a load, or not warmed up, wait until conditions improve. Don't get it going in 4th and then try to double-clutch-throttle-just-right-sync it into 5th. It only takes a few good grinds and you'll be doing an archive search on "jumps out of road gear."

Ran M's for at least 30 years. Always shifted from 4'th to 5'th. Never had A problem with gears! You cannot start out in 5'th without slipping the clutch too much. Try pulling out on a road with 175 to 200 bushels of corn behind from a stop in 5'th . No can do. I've spent thousands of hours on M's. 4 row cultivator/cutting hay /raking hay / bailing /disking / plowing / planting / ect. When your in 4'th and going to shift to 5'th push the clutch in and ease the shifter into 5'th. Not much grinding will occur and what does wont hurt a thing as long as you don't jam it in.
