My ? is, Why is the SMTA lps lettering on the serial number plate not coded corect? Like on the SM lps the code is correct. Is this because they{ Farmall] did not up date the manuals for the 1954 tractors? I have a SMTA lp { S# 62459DS} that I pursed in Tx. The owner said he bought it new in 54{he is 68}with the lp on the tractor. Is there anyone that owens a smta lp with the corret lettering on the serial # plate? and wich is the corret way for the fuel tank to sit? N. S. or E. W. sitting on it? Thanks Stew

My SMTA Lp tank mounts long ways N S. I have seen many M's with the tank sideways though. I am the third owner of my LP SMTA and the tractor also does not denote LP in the serial # on the clutch housing. The second owner bought it from the original owner and was told the tractor was bought new from IH with the LP setup.

Seems like I read that the LPG designation (C) is not necessarily on the chassis serial, it should follow the engine serial, as far as I know, I could be wrong. Are you sure you have the correct code? -- the L following the SM is to designate a Super M produced in Louisville.
