i took a flat pieca steel 1/2 inch thick, drilled 4 holes to match the flywheel bolts, bolt it on press the seal into place with the fly wheel bolts, take it back off , i bolt some allen head bolts 1 inch long i got at at a milletary surpluse store, put the plastic ring that comes with the seal , put the short bolts in tighten them up, seal is pressed to correct depth, it works great, ive put dozen;s of rear seals in andhad no problems , less than 20 bucks invested

I used this same idea with a homemade 1/8" Steel plate on my 1206 and it worked great

I would recomend somehow borrowing a tool to install it. I put a rear seal in my 856 one time without the tool and was very depressed when I went through all the work putting it back together and started it up and it leaked. Unless you want to take the chance of having to split it again, I would get the tool. I ended up having IH dealer come to my home and installed for me.

I have done it with out the tool but it is hard to do with out messen up the seal . So i went and bought the spec.tool and it made life much easier. If the seal is hard then it is the seal that is the problem but if the seal is soft then i would be looken at the main bearings and a new seal . The tool bolts to the crankshaft and acts like a press and installs the seal and ware ring all at once and sets the depth of the seal and ware ring.
