How Long Will An M Run On Battery Alone?

I needed extra cranking power on a M tractor. I took the 6 volt battery off and replaced it with 12 volt. I then disconnected the generator, and put a resistor in line to the coil. The tractor cranks great and runs fine. The only thing is that it is not charging. I can always do this with a battery charger. Does anybody have an idea how long it will take for the points to run the battery down? I was told the points draw very little power.

I run an H and an M both the same way you are talking plus another non farmall tractor. I figure if it will start, it will run all day (lights off and don't plan on restarting). Is what the deal is, your battery has to be charged up so far to turn the tractor over, but after it is started, you can basically run the tractor untill the battery is pretty much dead which is along time. How many times will it start on a fully charged battery, you will just have to see but don't shut it off away from a battery charger. Mine will start a good 5 to 10 times depending on how many running hours. But I'm not sure how much you have to turn yours over for it to start. If you got a mag, you only need the battery to start.

Why did you remove the 6V battery? I'd put it back in then you can run forever. Dave.

Scott,

The coil on a M or H will draw something a bit south of 4 amps max. The battery should have some type of total capacity rating on it, let's say it says 50 aH or 50 ampere hours. A little quasi scientific long division says 50/4 = 12.5 so you can run it for twelve and a half hours continuously.

Just don't turn on the lights, and deduct 10 to 15 minutes everytime you start it (and it starts easily).

So if you're in no hurry to fix the charging circuit and you never run it at night -- you can use it for 5 hours of work per month, then after 70 days put a 2 amp trickle charger on the battery for two days and be ready to go for another few months. Simple, huh?

If you start fooling around at night, figure about 16 amps combined for the draw of the three lights in 6 volt flavor -- wait, change your bulbs to 12 now or you'll blow them. Actually, the 12V bulbs may draw a bit more, I've only measured the draw of the 6's on my H; so do a measurement so you'll know how to read your stopwatch to factor in lights.

I run my old road grader that way all the time, been to lazy/cheap to fix the alternator. But any way I have run if for around 4 hours and never had any problems and have even shut it off and started it 2 or 3 time with the same battery and charge

Not to worry unless you use the lights. Don't try to use them if the bulbs are still 6V either. They will go poof!! I've heard of running on battery alone for up to 4-5 months.

You are right about the 4 or 5 months. My uncle had a 230 that I never remember charging. He always hand cranked it, and he charged the battery bi-yearly.

I replaced the 6 volt with an 8 volt on my H. It gives it enough cranking power, plus the generator will charge it. It turns over well in winter, and I didn't have to add resistors.

Scott, Your tractor will run that way as long as you keep the battery charged. But you may forget to put charger on when you have low battery and when you need the tractor it wont start. From experiance.
