I was just reading another thread and didn't want to hijack someone elses question so I will ask here. Is it really ok to use 30 wt engine oil in the hydraulics? my tractor is a super c with fast hitch. It is restorred but gets used pretty hard and hey if it's better then I'm all for it. It would be easier to only keep one kind of oil around for it. I am getting ready to reseal the lift cylinder and redo a couple hoses and if you all think 30wt is good I will fill it back up with that. I know of a lot of other hydraulic systems that use engine oil just never thougght to try it on my tractor.

Use hytran -- if you insist on using motor use 10W in the touch control, 30W is for the H and M as stated below. You don't neccessarily have to use Hytran as you can buy a compatible fluid that meets Hytran specs at any farm store. Sorry about your dealer. Most Case-IH dealers are computerized and just enter the part number -- they don't have to know or care what tractor it's for, and money is money to them. Yes some of the older parts are overpriced -- but at least they fit.

I know it was sopposed to take touch control fluid or Hytran these days . In fact I have been using that ever since I restored the tractor. I worked as a mechanic at a case international dealer till last year when we moved and honestly I was never really convinced about the benefits of hytran but I guess I had to do just as many repairs on machines with oil in them too like some of the david browns and the little skid steers that case used to make. Their hydraulic systems were a real pain. I just read that other thread where the poster was saying use motor oil in them and got to wondering. I won't deal with the IH dealer here. They are rude, overpriced , and refuse to order parts for my super c even if I give them the current part number and everything. Luckily I left the dealer I worked at in pennsylvania on good terms and they will send me parts when I need them. I guess I better call them and order some hytran.

As CNKS said, you don't necessarily have to use Hy-Tran. Any universal tractor fluid designed for hydraulic and transmission application will work. You can get it at any farm supply store or tractor dealer. Even Walmart here has it.

Non-detergent 30 weight (not 30W - that is a winter oil) oil was only called for in the H and M belly pumps, and hydraulic systems before that. Non-detergent oil was called for because an oil with detergent in it will foam in the hydraulic system.

ALL of the live hydraulic systems need Hy-Tran to operate properly, along with all tractors that have TA need Hy-Tran.

The original manual calls for "IH Touch Control Fluid" in the Touch Control unit. That was a type of hydaulic fluid, not engine oil. You should use Hy-Tran in the Touch Control hydraulic system on your Super C.

I think the old manuals called for non-detergent motor oil cuz they didn't have anything better then. Now we have Hy-Tran and that's what I use. It is much better oil for hydralics. Dosn't thin out at high temp like your motor oil will.
