OK, I just picked this thing up and it turns over has good spark but no fuel seems to get to plug. I cleaned the entire carb but If I choke it, gas seeps out the outside of the carb. I tried spraying starter fluid in carb while starting and that did not even work! I believe it is a IH Cub Cadet 1440 or 1450 with 14 or 18 hp Kohler engine. Anyone have any idea what would keep the gas from getting to spark plug? It's got me baffled

Hi: Cleaning your carburetor does not mean you cleaned it but you went thru the process of cleaning. It may still have an area that is not permitting fuel to reach the engine. That's not said to be rude but to indicate that the problem still exist. A needle and seat can be the problem...the 4 stages a carb goes thru may not be met (Thanks to Bob Groot) ..float could be stuck..screen in carb could be clogged and or leaking gaskets all play a part but *what if* fuel is not even reaching the carb from a restriction from the tank to the carb. I am sure there are other answers and your problem can be solved. Albie

Mark - The fact that it has spark but won't fire even with ether shot into the carb leads me to think you've got a blown head gasket or a hole burned thru the head. Could also be a valve sticking open.

My inlaws have a Cub Cadet with a 12 HP Kohler. In 30 or so years of hard use it's blown out several head gaskets, and has burned a hole thru the cylinder head twice. Symtoms are a loss of power at first, followed shortly by a "no start" situation exactly as you describe.

One other possibility: If the engine's been sitting for a long time the cylinder may be dry so it cannot build compression. Try squirting a tablespoon or so of engine oil into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole, then replace the plug and see if it will start.

Funny you should mention sitting. It has been sitting for several months. The guy I bought it off of used it up until a few months ago. The starter went out and he sold it to me thinking it would run again. WRONG! I actually looked down in the top of cylinder and valve seems to move up and down. It has compression when I stick my finger over cylinder hole. Again though, it's dry as a bone in there. Will try putting some oil into cylinder though. Right now I am game for trying anything.

Is there a fuel shut off solenoid with a wire coming off of it in the bottom of the bowl of the carb?

No, it's just a bowl. No electrical things attached to carb.

If you remove screw at bottom of carb, and turn on the petcock at the tank, you can check if fuel is getting to the carb. It should run out. You can either hold a finger against the bowl to keep from having to reseat the bowl gasket, or just drop the bowl too so you can operate the float with your finger and verify that the needle valve is working.

Yep, it's definetely getting fuel to bowl. That's the problem. It's flowing out the overflow hole when I choke it and try and start it. For some reason it is not discharging fuel into intake valve area. It seems to run all over choke plate and outside part of carb!
