Went to a consignment sale recently and this darn thing followed me home.Had no intention of buying it, but bought it for less than most H's.Everything seems to be OK, except it has a rattle in the drive train. Doesn't really sound like a bad bearing.Sitting idling with the trans in neutral, just sort of a more or less steady clunk, clunk. Pulling the TA back slows the clunking. Moving ,the noise is more pronounced in reverse but doesn,t really seem to affect the movement of the tractor. Took it out on the road and brought it up to full throttle in 5th high, and couldn,t tell that there was any problem.Any insight on the problem would be appreciated. Can any one give me some general info on the tractor? I wasn't aware that IH had used anything but IH engines. Its a rowcrop, narrow front with a fast hitch. thanks

Here is a link with a bit of info on the tractor. You are right about the diesel engine, it is a bit of an oddball from Continental Motors made exclusively for IH. At least CASE-IH dealers still sell the filters for it. Wix also makes equivalent filters.

Doug: I suspect Jon has nailed it. I once had much the same with my 300, and teeth missing were the culprit.

Those tractors also tended to be a bit noisy in the live pto drive especially when idleing, however TA will not affect the speed of that.

The PTO makes a whining or whirring sound, not a clunk-clunk, so I agree a tooth or two missing in the tranny are a likely cause.

Evan: My dad bought a new 300 in 1955 and I had that tractor until it was 35 years old and probably 20,000 hours on it. The pto drive line rattled and clunked at the seasonal disconnect for all those years and through 4 rebuilds, 3 of which were done by IH dealer. I have heard other 300 and 350 doing this. It will happen at low idle and it did it from the day the tractor was new. I know the pto unit itself has a slight whine.

Oh, OK. My 350 only emits a whine/whirr when the PTO is off; I've never heard a clunk from it.

Evan: That clunk or rattle I spoke of was either in or behind the seasonal disconect. When the pto was disconected at that point it would not make the noise. On one of the rebuilds the IH dealer replaced some quite expensive parts trying to correct this. It didn't work. There were not a lot of scrap yard parts in 1960. I have heard other 300 and 350 doing this, so assumed they all do it.

$750. Decent rubber, good tin , missing the grill. Info on the 350 link posted said there were about 12000 of these made. Anyone know how many were gas and how many were diesel ? Thanks for the info everybody.

Someone posted the number of 350Ds here once, but I don't remember it exactly. The number was in the 3000-4000 range. I don't remember it that was the count of just the Farmalls or both Farmalls and Internationals.

Sounds like you are missing a tooth on one of your countershaft gears if it doesn't do it in 5th.
