Bill: My opinion the 504 gas was the first poor tractor IH built. Rated at 46 hp a Farmall 300 at 36 hp would work circles around them. The one I had came with a farm I bought. Previous owner had just done a complete engine rebuild at 1600 hours. He had talked with several other owners and advised me not to keep the 504 any longer than I had to. Rebuilder had told him the next rebuild would be a new block. The 504 gas was one of the first IH tractors not to have sleeves.

I had planned on keeping this tractor and selling my 300, however after a day in the field the 300 stayed. Yes the 504 was easy to sell with 3 point. I did notice it spent a lot of time dealers used lot over next 15 years. It must have had close to a dozen owners.

The diesels were a great tractor.

The first year or two I worked summers at my grandfather's IH dealership the new 504s and 404s came in. I think they were the first to come from the factory with the 3-point hitch. I loved 'em. They seemed way modern next to the 350s and Ms.

Hi bill. I'm the 2nd owner of my IH504, a 1964 model utility. It's a versatile and handy tractor. My kids and I even compete in the stock classes at our local pulling club with it! E-Mail me any questions you may have, I've had my 504 since 1980. Don

The Farmall is a row crop, longer and more clearance, choice of narrow front, single front or wide front. The International is a utility, shorter, lower (smaller diameter rear tires) and wide front only. The engine is worth fixing if the block isn't shot.

I think it is sort of a rare tractor. Therefore, you should keep it and fix it up. Go to our website, www.oldoakfarmalls.com, to see our 504
