Relocating the battery under the seat on an M

How much would be involved to relocate the battery under the seat on an M. I would like to be able to put a hydraulic tank where the battery is. I see the Super M's have the battery under the seat. It looks like there is a shorter spring steel seat mount is the rest of the seat the same. Does the SM have a shock on the seat like the M does? I guess I would be converting my M seat to a SM battery box and seat. Has anyone done this?

Here is a thought. Why not mount a oil tank inplace of the battery box under a seat?
Maybe end up with a hot butt I dont know.

I would advise mounting the battery on the frame rail beside the starter. the shorter you keep the battery cables the better. Here is a pic of the pulley shifter rod. it is 16 inches long.

Is that rod about the same diameter as the rod for hydraulic lever? My tractor doesn't even have that hole for the rod to go through. Is that just a bolted on tab. I have a place right next to the hydraulic control for a rod to fit but it can't be for the pulley. It's to the right of the hydraulic control and would not line up with the pulley lever the angles are wrong.

yes, the rod goes through a bolted on tab, sorry the pic don't show it better. about 5/16 rod. I will watch for a chance to get a better pic.

Richard, there is a super M seat, minus the battery box, listed on e-bay right now. Item #2577073042

I agree with Rusty’s suggestion. But plan on buying a new SM battery box. Chances of finding an intact (ie not rusted out) SM battery box at a boneyard are slim at best. Original boxes simply do not survive 50+ years of battery outgassing, condensation, etc. The good news is new battery boxes are readily available for $80 - $90 or so.

Just go to a salvage yard and buy the complete battery box and seat assembly for a super M. It is a direct swap. Finding a unit that is in useable condition will be another matter entirely.
