OK..I just bought a 1959 460 Gas utility serial number 2800 SY. previous owner said they resleeved it...It runs good and no smoke. Here goes the questions.
1. It moves to wide open throttle with just a small movement of the lever..Do the govenors go bad or just need adjustment?
2. I didn't see the extra mark indicating the bearing update in the tranny. At some point the TA went out and 4th gear has a chip in it. Should I tear this baby apart and do the update? Do those bearings fail that often?
3.Who is the best company to go to for parts and emblems etc.
The tractor is far from a basket case It just needs some attention that it hasn't had in probably 20 years.

Your tractor may not have been updated, as I am not sure the recall applied to the utility, just to the row crop. The gearing would be different due to the different tire size, and may have presented fewer problems. Anyway, most problems were with the 560. I would be interested if anyone can answer this, as I could be wrong. As indicated below, those involved in the recall have the symbol on the serial number plate.

do these have the serial number any other place on them the reason i ask is because the tag is wiped clean there is nothing on it .they should have stamped the numbers on them.

i just got a 460 ute about a year ago and as for the t/a i was told mine was out and for what i use it for just moving snow and pulling my 6ft rotary mower i don't need the t/a and unless your gonna be pulling something big i wouldn't worry about the t/a and as for 4th gear thats the one gear i don't use . my main gears are 1st 2nd 3rd mowing and 5th down the road, think right when i got it i tried all the gears and they worked fine but just don't use 4th and if it's just gonna be an acrage tractor like mine you probably won't use it either.and as for the throttle get a manual it shows how to set the linkage.i love mine runs smooth lots of power and its short and fits in my garage.do you have the 2 or 3 pt on the back?and do you have a loader for it?

i don't know when they fixed the bearings but i would like to know if mines been fixed. what did they use for a mark and where did they put it?i just have the 2pt but have the upper mount for the 3pt the only thing i don't like is the power steering is almost non-existant with the loader on it i need to find somebody that can fix this or try something different i saw on here awhile back of somebody that used a hyd cyl on each tie-rod and used the original pump. sounds like a good fix.

From my understanding the serial number was marked with an extra triangle to signify that it was updated by IH. I am sure many units never where fixed but I can't imagine that it was that bad of a setup...maybe under extreme conditions I guess I could just role the dice.

I used to use a 560 diesel on the farm 20 years ago and I hardly ever used the TA. and your right about 4th. I have the 3pt. conversion and no loader. I am clearing 7 acres...most of the big work will be done by my CAT 955...I bought this as a clean up unit...gonna run a chipper..bush hog..and light duty earth moving...Everyone has me worried about this bearing problem. I have read every post on here about the 460 utility...When did they excatlt fix the problem..bet it wasn't by 59.

For 460 parts and emblems call Knight Tractor Salvage (651-307-1206). Talk to Scott...he has many 460 U's for parts. I have some 460U spare sheetmetal and emblems too.

"International Harvestor Tractors 1955-1985" by Ken Updike discusses this. I don't know how long the program lasted, but the notification went out to the dealers in June 1959. Other modifications that did not solve the problem were done earlier, but the book is not clear on whether this was on tractors already sold, or those in stock. The program was supposed to be a rather extensive modification of the rear end, but Ken quotes a IH service rep who says that some tractors not yet sold by the dealer merely got new axle bearings -- the inner bearing became the outer bearing, and a different inner bearing was installed. My opinion is that if your tractor was going to have problems, it would have had them long before now.
