Okay, so I'm putting the motor back on the H and there are two studs in the bellhousing at about 2 and 7 'o clock (carefully installed with a little green loctite). They are half stud and half dowel. Technically, pn 45979D, Engine Rear Support Dowel. Imagine my surprise when the threads will not go through the holes in the rear engine plate.

What on earth are they for ?

Greg

The studs with the threaded end are designed that way to make splitting the tractor a bit easier. The threaded end is always placed to the front of the tractor so that when splitting, the studs can be easily removed (if they are stuck in place) by simply tightening a nut on them which will draw them out of the bellhousing.

They apparantly screw into the engine before the plate goes on. It's a lot easier to align something heavy, such as the engine to clutch housing, if you have dowels, rather than trying to get bolts started and risk stripping the threads, etc.

I figured that they were supposed to help line up the motor and the tube. But IH seems to have gone out of their way to make an overly complicated pin. A 5/16" long stub would have been much handier to use and a lot easier to make.

The parts book shows them as being treaded, so I doubt that it is a spurious part. Does anyone know what the treaded portion was for ?

It sure looked like it would go in before the motor.

These are lineup, support studs. Think the stud part is amaller than the thread part so think they would have to go in before you attach engine unless they will thread in from back side. They are to keep things lined up and to help line stuff up when putting engine on.
