I have an opportunity to purchase an older tractor from a neighbor's estate. The owner died unexpectedly and his family knows nothing about the tractor in question. It is obviously quite old, but I have no idea exactly how much so. It says "International 300 Utility" on the side and has a serial number that appears to be 860558-R8. However, it is worn and its possibly the 8's are actually 3's. It has a bucket on the front and a york rake on the back. It seems to have been kept outside for some time and has a fair amount of rust, but it does run well and looks as if the gentleman had made efforts to take care of it.

Is it possible to estimate the age from the serial number, and if so, an estimate of what would be a fair offer for it?

The 300 utility tractor was only made in 1955 and 1956. The serial number you gave is not matching up. Check on the right hand side of the bell housing(clutch housing) and look for a metal tag with a number. It will be no less than 501 and no more than 33664. 501 through 20218 is a 1955. 20219 through 33664 is a 1956. I have seen one with a front loader in good shape sell for around 2000-2500. Just depends how well it works and what all is there. Hope this helps.

It's either a '55 or '56, the number you posted looks like a part number. Depending on the condition of the tires, it might be worth $3500.

Great, thank you both for the information! Condition of the tires? I can't say as I really noticed that, but will walk back up and take a peek, as well as look for the correct serial number. thank you both again!
