Cub - cracked head

I am trying to help a friend get an old (1949) Cub up and running....it had been sitting for 5-6 years with no coolant or gas. After going through carb, wiring, plugs, etc. I finally got it running last night. Runs smooth, hydraulics work.....I'm feeling real good! Then all of a sudden I start to see a tell tale puddle of coolant on the garage floor. Further inspection shows a hairline crack on the top of the head were is is leaking..... very small amount, but still leaking. I am not a mechanic but have fair mechanical skills. Can the head be fixed? What should I do? Cost? Do I need to worry about the possibility of a cracked block too?...and how would I check for that?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Depending on where it is on the head you might try some JB weld clean up the area real well first, or you might try some Rad. stop leak and or both. As far as a cracked block is there any water/antifreeze in the oil if not you probably don't have a problem there. you could also get a rebuilt head for it. Hope this helps some

that is a very common place for the cub head to crack. you could braze it, try J.B. weld type stuff, or spend around $125 and buy a new one. i have bought several with a cracked head and never had one that cracked the block. you might also want to look for a crack under the radiator on the cast iron resevoir just below the hand crank hole, very common place to crack.

Thanks to all for the help. What should I have to pay for a weld repair? Does the head need to be taken off? Has anyone had any success with block type sealers that you add to the cooling system? Thanks in advance for the replys.
