I have a International tractor that I came upon a couple weeks ago. I Need someone to help me Identify it. The serial plate is gone. The engine size is a C-135 and it has 4 foward and 1 reverse. The tractor has 14.9x28 tires and has a wide front end. It has a factory 3-point hitch. I think it is a 404, but would like to be reasured. I need to do a little work to it and want to buy a shop manual.

Thanks,

Butch

Definetly a 404. A 404 Utility, most likely, since it has 14.9x28's. The 404 is the only IH with a 4-speed and a C-135. The 330 and 340 also had the C-135, but they had 5-speeds and no factory 3-point. The newer tracors like the 424, 444, and 2444 were a totally different design, having a form of live PTO. The sheetmetal on a 404 looks just like a 706 or an early 656.

I should have mentioned that the 444/2444 (haven't seen a 424 in person) have hi/low 4 speeds or 8 speeds forward, 2 reverse, haven't seen this in print, but I've always thought they were similar to the British utilities.

Is there any way for you to post a photo? The 404, 424 & 444 are all similar. THEN AGAIN, it could possibly be a 2444... A photo would help narrow things down. I own a 1965 424 Diesel, and I can tell you that photos of 424's are rare. I found an I & T Service Manual a few years ago, and that manual covers several different tractors. I hope this helps.

The 424 has a C146, the 444/2444 have C153's.

I can't help you except to say that the 330 and 340 also used the C135, and that 28 inch rear rims are common to almost every utility tractor. Wide front ends are common to ALL utilities. Someone else can help identify if you describe the sheet metal, etc in greater detail.
