Iknew when i purchased the tractor it would need some steering work. The steering wheel has 5 inches of playin it. I noticed when I lifted the front wheels off the ground the steering shaft & sector drop down about 1/4 inch or less. Now with the wheels of the ground the steering has 1/2 play in it.My question is . Is that a normal amount of up and down play in the shaft and would it be safe to assume that I need a new worm gear and or sector.Where can I find these parts at a reasonable price. Thanks To all that can give me any info

Gary, Hi, Take your lid off the top of the bolster and turn the steering wheel while you watch the shaft. It will probably move back and forth quite a bit. This creates alot of wobble and once you fix it the tractor will drive so much better. The shaft you should watch is the one the gear is sitting on. Good Luck.

I'd start by looking at the u-joint in the steering shaft, also the bearing on the steering box end of the worm gear shaft. those are often the culprit in loose steering.
I just live with alot of play in my H's steering until I can go through the steering it needs all the bushings and bearings replaced

A friend of mine had alot of steering play in his H. We put a washer under the round gear on the vertical shaft and began tightening the nut. WE tightened the nut all the way down until we ran out of threads and pulled the the shaft up considerably. The result was much tighter steering and no wobble when on the road. This worked well for us. Good Luck.

The up and down play is more than likely caused by the bearing being gone... Perhaps also the bushing is shot, correct those, and it'll help alot.

A little upand down play is normal. If you have a full gear in the sector try turning it to a spot on the gear that hasn't been used before. You can tell by the wear marks on the gear where it has been used before. Place the gear on the shaft so that the new spot is engaging the worm when you are steering straight ahead. 5 inches is alot of play. You may need a new worm and the gear may not have any good spots left on it. Also the bushings could be getting worn from all the years of use. You will want to put new seals in it if it is leaking oil. To replace the bottom seal you will have to remove the front end drop the upper shaft down. If you do that make sure you do a good job of blocking the tractor up.
