I have a H that I would like to convert to a 12v
negitive ground system. Would that affect the
magneto ?

I use a normally open oil pressure switch to excite the alternator. That way alternator startup is automatic. There is no additional switch to remember to turn on or off and you won't accidentally drain the battery because of forgetting a switch.

A magneto needs no battery at all. It produces it's own spark. When you convert to 12 volts (which would be mostly for starting purposes anyway), you generally use negative ground. The main reason for this is that an alternator is generally used, which almost always wants a negative ground.

The only thing you need to allow for when using a magneto and an alternator is... the alternator usually uses a connection to the ignition switch for the exciter connection. You have no ignition switch on a magneto, so you would need to install an additional switch.

Tony , Just make sure the wire going down to the magneto is (NOT) hooked to the battery in (ANY) way.If there is a wire coming from the magneto it is to short or ground the mag. to shut the tractor off. Earl

Shouldn't affect the magneto at all as it doesn't use juice from the battery to operate. If you check in articles section here I think there is a great description of how to do this written by Bob M

I have read that articles you mentioned. What I
am wondering about is that a magneto is made for
a positive ground system, or at least I would think that it is. I would like to keep the
magneto, but if that wouldnt work than I could go
ahead and find a battery style distributer.

If you go -12 volt the only thing you have to do is use a momentary toggle switch to the F (field)terminal on the alternator from the battery to excite the field.Once that you have done that you don't need any voltage on the terminal as the alternator creats its own once its charging. The mag doesn't care if you even have a battery as long as it turns.

A magneto does not care if the tractor is 6 volt, 12 volt, 24 volt, or anything else. It does not care if the system is a negative ground, or a positive ground. Why? Because the magneto is totally independent of the battery or any type of charging system. It will function even if your tractor does not have a battery, which is what it was intended for. Most magneto equipped tractors do not have an electrical system, and are started by hand cranking.
