My TA works in direct drive (hi).
It shifts fine into low and moves. But as soon as you get any resistance it slips.
What should I be looking for wile I have it open?

Kelly, Rick is right the ta itself is bad not the clutch. I have changed my 300, & 560 both the same as you describe, both ta's ramp and rollers were bad. By the way always enjoy reading your posts. Brian

If it pulls OK in direct drive, both the main clutch and the TA clutch are OK. The ramps and rollers are worn out. If you want to fix it more temporarily, you can make the rear split and replace the rollers, I am told. I would recommend either running it in direct, or making the double split and replacing/ repairing the unit completely and properly.

Sounds to me like the clutch in the TA is slipping. Check for wear on the plate. Good luck!!

You'll want to check the ta clutch, on my SMTA you could access it from a plate on the top of the housing. Just look at it though to fix it you have to diss a semble the whole thing. I think if it is just slipping in low it is probably the ramp and roller setup. There are a couple options if that is the case, if only ramp and roller problem you can get a bebuilt ramp and roller or you can update to a sprague type setup which is supposed to be more solid. When I did mine I got a rebuilt ramp and roller from steel wheel ranch, they also had a conversion to sprague type for more money or a complete rebuilt ta, You will also need seals and gaskets and depending upon condition of ta clutch plate possibley one of those also. Not a rela bad job if you have a hoist or loader tohandle the heavy center housing. Much easier if you have service book and parts book.
