Oil Pump in 400

I have torn down, cleaned and reassembled the oil pump in my 400 rebuild. When the oil pan was first removed way back at the beginning of this project, I noticed the floating oil pickup strainer was stuck in the highest position, which might explain why the crankshaft was ruined. It seems that what is causing the strainer to hang up is a rubber o-ring that goes on the strainer tube and sits into a recessed area of the pump body. I do not have a parts book, so I am asking all you experienced mechs: Is this o-ring even needed? If so, what corrective action do I take? Thanks!

I looked at the parts book formy smta which should be sililar to yours. It doesn't show an o ring on the tube from the floating pickup to the pump. Does the O ring make the tube too tight agains the pump housing. It should move up and down freely. While you are there you will want to check the pump for wear inside and for clearance between the gears and cover.

Yes, the o-ring is causing the float to bind. If your parts book doesn't show one, I'm not going to put it back in. It could screw up my whole rebuild.

Bill - I've recently done oil pumps on a 400 and a Super H. Neither had an O-ring on the pickup float nipple. Rather the nipple is just stuck into the pump - the float moves up and down very freely.
