I just bought a H with a wide front. How do I tell if it a Schwartz or IH wide front? Thanks

Troy,

My H has a Schwarz wide front. It bolts to the bottom of the upper bolster with two heavy angle irons. The front axle is carried in a welded bracket. There is also an oval tag on the left side that says 'Schwarz Mfg.' The IH wide front has a triangular casting that bolts to the bottom of the bolster and carries the axle tube. I think. I knew Norton made motorcycles, but wide fronts for tractors ?

Hi Troy,

The IH had the tie rods, drag link & center drop out in front of the axle; the aftermarkets tucked the tie rods in behind.

Also, the Swartz has 'turn stops' out on top of the ends of the axle and the IH's used the stopbolt.

Have a good one,

Allan

Later style IHC had tie rods in the back. I would recommend checking for casting marks/codes IHC usually put them on everything. Or you could post a picture and several responses could establish the manufacturer. Enjoy. Dick Davis

Tie rods behind were not original with the "H".
The 300, 400, etc, had the newer style WFE with the tie rods behind; this style also could turn a smaller circle.

Hi Dick,

H's had 'em in the back? I didn't know this & have never laid eyes on this animal.

Learn something new every day.

Thanks,

Allan

Duh... IHC and Swartz were common WFEs but others made them as well... Norton did as I recall. This will be my last postiong on this matter, next year I will be more organized!
