Just got the 3 7/8 liner out of a MD. Bare block measures 4 1/8 in. Would old 4 1/8 pistons work in the bare block without any liner? Would head gasket seal without the lip of the liner sticking up?

All depends on what you are going to do with the tractor. If you are going to use the tractor for everyday use I would stay with stock sleeves. If you are trying for pulling go for it, but you should sure you have the right clearance. Or you could put a 450 block in. You wont gain maybe about 10 hp. for your effort.

A lot of guys that pull tractors with me bore the blocks out and make them so the rings will be able to get set in. I bored my '49 M gas out to a 4 1/8, but I put the sleeves in it. Kicks about 65 horsepower. I don't know how much power a diesel would get but it should be up around 60 at least if you turn the pump up on it. I have always wanted to try it, but there isn't any diesels around my area. If you don't want to wear the block out, do what I did, but if it doesn't matter, bore it out, and run high dome pistons right on the walls. My only concern would be overheating. If you overheat, put a thermostate in the engine. That's what I had to do. Good luck!!

You could probably get by without sleeves if you get the right head gasket. The problem is if anything ever happens to one of the pistons/cylinders then you are left with boring the block and putting in oversized sleeves and pistons. Keep in mind also that the cylinder bores in the block may not be made of as hard of material as a liner and you could get pre-mature cylinder wear leading you back to boring the block. Why not do it right the first time and put in the liners? Just my $0.02 worth.
