Starting problem on Farmall M

I have a friend whose Farmall M will not start. He said it used to run fine, and then about 8 months ago it would not start anymore. It will not even offer to fire. It sets inside a dry barn all the time.

He has since had the points, distributor cap, plug wires, and coil changed, and it still will not start. I am not sure the points are set right, but do not have the specs.

The system is 12 volt, but I don't know if it should be negative ground or positive ground. The other day when we cranked it, the battery cables got very hot and it was negative ground.

Any information (including the specs) you could give me will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

I agree with Wayne. What is missing from the overall equation?

It takes three things for an engine to run: air/fuel mixture, ignition at the proper time, and compression.

Look for what is missing.

Regards,

Allan

If the cables are hot, you have cranked too long (30 seconds max) or have a bad connection somewhere.
The tuneup specs are found in the "Tune-up Specs" link on the left side of this page.
Next attempt determine what is not happening:
1. is there spark at the right time? Make sure the wires in the distributor are not accidentally grounded.
2. is the compression decent? Squirt some oil in each cylinder to regain what has disappeared with your starting attempts.
3. is there a fresh fuel supply (less than a month old) getting to the cylinders? Remove the spark plugs & put a teaspoon of gas in each cylinder, replace the plugs , turn on the switch, and try cranking.
The 12 volt system is negative grounded and the coil negative terminal should be attached to the points terminal.
Take your time, check out each component like you were Sherlock Holmes and you should have a running "M" soon.
