Working on a 1931 Regular.Have found GREEN paint under the remains of what remains of a coat of red.Haven't found any sign of gray paint.Did maybe the gray change to green before or after the red was applied? Or maybe somebody just gave it a coat of what they had at hand? Might never know! Trying to imagine how a GREEN Regular would look.Anybody ever encounter something like this?

My neighbor painted his FARMALL M John Deere green, so I know that it is done by some people, just don't know why.

I restored an F20N that was green when I bought it. Odd thing was, the green was under parts that were bolted on, so it was not painted while together, but while the parts were just parts, then assembled. I dont know if some jd fan owned it, or if it was primer, or if it was owned by a town road crew that wnated it green, but it was green. It is now red.

You sure that it was paint, not primer? Years ago we used a primer called Zinc Chromate, it was green, and worked very well on old iron, the Feds have outlawed it now.

My first job upon graduating from High School was working for a man named Curtis Pitts (Pitts Special) fabricating components for aerobatic airplanes. The airframe and all parts were generously painted with zinc chromate. He also had a fleet of crop dusters built in the 1930's that were painted the same. I never knew one to have rust spots once the green coat was applied. Believe me, if Zinc cromate were still available, I would have used it as a primer for my tractor last winter.

Not only did that Green zinc chromate primer keep the rust away, but it never seemed to deteriate. The finish coat woul but once it got to the primer, it would stay that way for a long long time. Leave it to the Feds to screw up another thing, but what else could we expect. Remember this is the same bunch of Morons that outlawed DDT so that now more lives are lost through disease than DDT ever took.

There are a lot of imbeciles out there who believe everything the tree-hugging idiots preach. I still think the only hole we have in the ozone layer is over Washington DC -- probably above Congress, that's where the Global Warming comes from!!

Paul, Not so much imbeciles, but rather mis-informed, and ignorant of true facts. Some of the most lame brained theories are embraced if they sound like they could make sense. The problem is that we allow someone else to do our homework for us. We need to read and rely on facts and proven data rather than hypothetical, emotional, and unproven conjecture. It may get some folks attention, but it sure doesn't get mine. How many times are we going to believe the guy who says he cant pay his bills because the dog ate his wallet.

Andrew, As Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast".....Before you call "ME" stupid, perhaps you need to do some homework of your own. The whole DDT hysteria came about as the result of a book written by Rachel Carson, based on zero scientific data in which she claimed that DDT killed birds, caused cancer and other unproven and still unproven maladys. Environmentalist activists stated their case to a congressional hearing, and no data was presented to support the charge, still EPA director Wm Ruckleshaus ordered the ban without even attending the hearings or reading the transcripts. Now malaria is on the rise worldwide causing countless deaths not to mention West Nile Virus. I can probably get the statistics, but you read the papers. How many human deaths can you attribute to DDT? I can answer that. Zero, Zilch, Nada, in spite of the fact that all prisoners lliberated from natzi concentration camps were bathed in DDT to rid them of lice and other pests. Perhaps this reply doesnt belong here, but Agriculture has taken a big hit die to the ban of DDT.

Jimmy, Thanks. I could have cited chapter and verse to Andrew, but to keep the reply short and to the point, paraphrased my reply. Anyone can go to Google and type in DDT myth and get a phletora of scientific data supporting the virtue of DDT compared to some of the "legal" more lethal stuff out there now, I have yet to see any scientific data to support the ban. I'm not even advocating the agricultural use, but mosquito control is a life or death issue worldwide, and we are choosing death because of ignorance. Now the same people are trying to boycott genically engineered seed thru the same ignorance, while other people starve. Gee, and all this started with green paint..... .Goes to show you the hazard of green paint, doesn't it?

I used the green primer on a steel channel bumper I made on the back of my pick-up to pull hay wagons with,I never painted the bumper and keep the truck for about 10 years, and rust never came through

Could be.Seems like I'd have found some evidence of gray paint between the primer and the red.Unless maybe it was sandblasted or striped and then primed with the zinc, then the red paint?Just thought it was strange. The green I'm seeing reminds me of Rustoleum's hunter green.
