Gentlemen, I know that a super M uses 30 wt oil for the hydralic system(belly pump). Will the belly pump work at all if hydralic fluid is used? Does it just not work at all or does it just not develop as much pressure? Thanks D Sellers
Let me hear from you Hugh Mckay

Hydraulic fluid is a pretty broad term. It can mean just about any type of oil, from the stuff you put in the power steering in your car, to the heavy duty stuff that goes in heavy equipment. In the belly pump you can use just about any of it, and it will still function,(I know from experience), but your best bet will be to follow what the manual says. That being said, I can also tell you that whatever you put in the engine will also work in the belly pump. you can also use Hy-Tran, and, dare I say it here? John Deere transmission-hydraulic fluid will work just fine. I think the problem with foaming comes only with continous, heavy use.

The hydraulic fluid will work, and it should not harm the system. You may not develop as much pressure, due to the fact that the hydraulic fluid is lower viscosity and therefore will around the clearances in the pump more easily.

Doyle: I'm a poor one to ask on this, our last belly pump tractor left the farm in early 60's. Really never tried anything but mineral oil. That is what we used as we found it wasn't as subject to foaming as ordinary 30wt. Contrary to what most people say regarding performance on hydraulics, we found 300 and 560 never matched the lifting abilities of the old H and SM belly pumps. Having said that it was still good to have live hydraulics. This is one reason I tend to shy away from letter series discussion. Other than the SA, I don't have a lot of experience with them. The little bit of experience I did have was so long ago.
