Farmall 200 Carb Rebuild Question

I bought the rebuild kit for the Zenith carb on my Farmall 200. It was leaking and pretty well gummed up with black crud, so I figured why not? Everything going pretty well except that, when re-assembling the float/seat assembly, the rebuild kit came with this itty-bitty, sort of U-shaped, fairly stiff spring that I don't remember being on the original carb. It was in the bag with the new float pin, seat, etc. How do I fit it on? Does it go in the notch in the float valve, or around the float pin? Is its purpose to keep the float in one or another direction or to open the valve against the float? The instructions that came with the rebuild kit are of no help. Hope someone with more experience has some suggestions.

Hey, good deal - I couldn't get a rebuild kit for my 200 - when I needed one. NAPA had ones for the other carbs, but not mine - have forgotten what mine is right now. Anyway, in many cases, a rebuild kit may fit several different carbs, and may have extra parts that you don't need. I always save the extra pieces, often they come in handy for emergency repairs on something else later. Use the parts you need.

And on an additional question, the choke plate seems to go on the shaft in only one way. However, that way does not allow a match up with the spring loaded ball that fits into a notch on the plate where the choke rod attaches to the choke shaft. I think this is intended to give the choke a sort of spring-loaded on/off feel. I guess I could be looking at a unit that was assembled incorrectly in the first place, because it sure does not seem to want to go back together the way I took it apart.

Also, does anyone know which way the choke door (tiny, spring loaded opening in the choke plate itself) is supposed to go? I would think that it should allow some air to get past when the choke is in the on position, but it does not want to go together that way for me. Should not the suction from the engine tend to suck open the choke door in the choke plate?

I guess I should have gotten fewer interruptions when I was taking this thing apart. Thanks for any info.

David: As for the little u-shaped devices you are correct in assuming that its purpose is to keep the needle valve in contact with the float. If you don't feel you need it, leave it out. But I have seen cases where the needle can tend to "stick" in the valve area. This connector eliminates this problem. As for the choke shaft not fitting properly, first compare it closely with your original shaft if you have it. I have rebiult hundreds of carbs and you would not believe how many I see that are not for said application or have the wrong parts used. Do not be suprised however if the choke or throttle shaft do not correspond to the original. Many of the aftermarket kits I have used have faulty parts. For example I recently rebuilt 30 farmall-400 carbs and out of 30 kits, I had maybe 5-6 throttle shafts I could use. Glad I have plenty of parts left from previous rebuilds. Hope this helps.
