Coolant Drain Frozen up -- IH C

Anyone know what can be done to free up a locked up coolant drain on a 'C' ? I would like to drain the antifreeze because I can't run the engine to make sure it is mixed properly (I added antifreeze because tester showed only one ball floating -- engine makes a bad noise so do't want to run it). The drain has that silly oval wingnut and I don't know how much torque I can apply to it. The lower radiator hose is a tough steel-reinforced thing I can't get off. Any suggestions?

As a follow-up: I did get the wing-nut cap off the coolant drain pipe. What you have is a drain pipe that comes from the lower water outlet on the engine. The pipe (1/2" ID?) is simply threaded pipe and the wing-nut is merely a cap for that pipe. For anyone else with this problem I'd suggest heating the cap and then greasing it up good once it is off. Thanks to all who responded.

On the C that pipe goes into the lower housing or if yours has a water pump it goes there. There is no drain for the block. You can remove the housing or the water pump which ever you have without removing the radiator then replace the bad piece of pipe that is rusted fast.

You are correct, I've had all that off of a C and an H, was thinking about the H.

Either the wingnut comes off or breaks, or the pipe screws out of the radiator -- don't worry about breaking the wing nut, just don't mess up the bottom of the radiator taking the pipe out.

Not much, you will bust the wings off or twist the pipe off. Check into draining the block on the side. That plug is likely stuck too. the lower hose will drain the rad but don't know how much will be left in the block.

If you have engine troubles, then you are more than likely going to have to remove the radiator, so why don't you just cut the bottom hose and let it drain that way?

I've never looked at a super C up close, but look for a drain on the side of the block. My H & M have them. It's just a big threaded plug with a wing on it. Just don't stand in front of it, as the antifreeze will shoot a couple feet. after drainging the M yesturday, I had to ride home(an hour) with wet jeans. UG!

Good point Bindernut, about standing aside, and I drained an H once and when I removed the plug there was no fluid coming so I poked a wire into the hole.....I went home with wet pants too...sometimes the drain holes clog over and you need to run something into them to get them cleared.....Mike in Exeter Ontario
