Should I hot-dip this block?

I've got my 1946 A stripped down to the bare block. The head and valves have been professionally restored, the crankshaft has been reground and a sleeve/piston kit has been ordered. I have hand-cleaned the inside of the block including water jacket and oil passages. But, as I approach the time to install the new sleeves and pistons i'm wondering if I made a mistake by not having the block professionally hot-dipped. Is hand cleaning good enough or should I take the block to my machinist for cleaning?

Brad: You already have a considerable investment, so to have the job done right, boil the block. I just overhauled one of my 856's(d-407) and had the shop boil the block and the head. The shop includes checking for cracks in the price of hot tanking, so that is one less thing to worry about. I also have them remove cam bearings and intall new ones. I know it adds to the price but this tractor has paid its way(7000hrs), and I expect to get that many more out of it.

Thanks, guys. I'm taking the block in to the shop tomorrow. You're right, I'll never have her stripped down to this stage for a long, long time; so better do it right.

I rebuilt my (a) engine from top to bottom, and in my opinion after that much time and money to overhaul it, I would have it tanked.

I'm currently restoring my Farmall 450. I have the motor all apart and I'm definitely going to hot-tank it. It will completely clean the block, in and out, better than any job by hand can do. you can only get so far by hand. If you want to do it right, I'd do the tank.

Just exactly what is in the hot tank that will remove rust and hard water mineral deposits?
And what temperature is it?
