I have a friend that keeps bugging me about finding him a fron unit for his M. I gather that some were made by Elwood but am unable to trace the lead any further. could one be built by using a truck front end and driving off the brake pinion?

Hey,if you have an idea how to fabricate and hook it all up I'm sure it could be done.Theres a fellow here in NY that built a 4WD tractor out of a Massey and a front axle from a deuce& a-half.I think it has a transfer case mounted under it too.If memory serves me he used some heavy rollerchain-sprockets in there some place to get the proper ratio. He did a nice job on it,have seen it at Canandaguia Pagent of Steam several times.

Sure they are out there. I've only seen them on 560s, but that means the unit would go right onto the M. These front ends drove off the belt bulley and only matched up in one gear, (third, I think,) and they wouldn't pull going backward. Look in the sandhills, someone has an old unused frontend in their big weeds. Good hunting

If I read the question right you are looking for the front-end for an M Farmall, correct? I have a complete lower bolster w/ wheels(narrow) if you are interested email me directly rodneyttu@aol.com.

I do not know why anyone would want to tackle rebuilding one of these.

Finding an axle with a gear ratio that would match up to the tractor would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Someone may answer here, but seems there was a thread on the forum on Red Power Magazine a while back-- you might ask there, those things are not very common. Perhaps Ken Updike will answer (posts on both forums). Seems like the truck axle would be more trouble than it's worth -- unless he just wants something different.
