Howdy folks

I got a new thermostat for my 100 Farmall and it is held in by a clip like thing that goes around the thermo housing in a groove, My question is that the thermostat moves up and down about an inch or so, is this normal?

again i say the thermostat has tobe held tight. i just went out and looked a ih 135 engine thermo housing. the stat is held tight by the snap ring. the stat is placed into the larger bore and seated to the smaller bore of the stat housing. then the retainer ring is snapped into the groove that is at the surface of the stat flange. problem for me before was that the stat flanges are not as thick as were made years ago, thus mine had a few thousands up/down movement. the engine would not warm up to operating temp. i shimmed the stat tight between the stat flange and snap ring with a aluminum ring i made from some coil stock i had. is your groove rusted up that your not installing the ring where it should go? do you have a smaller bore for the stat to seat to? do you have a aftermarket stat housing? no way should it move a inch. i also had this same problem with a chevy truck engine, (loose stat in housing). hope this helps.

Clete: I have a Farmall 130, it is close to 10 years since I had it apart, so I am a bit rusty on this. My tractor has section hose about 1" long and right size to fit inside either rad hose or tube where thermostat goes. I do remember it being associated with holding thermostat in place. Does this make sence to you? Just wondered if such a hose would take up slack you speak of?
