Not sure if my tractor is a 400 or 450

I own a farmall that is painted like a Farmall 450. However, it has a 264 gas engine, like a 400 would so I'm wondering if maybe it actually is a 400 or if someone just swapped the engines around on it. The serial tag is worn and only shows the numbers, "12678 S". I am planning on selling it and want to make sure that I advertise it as the correct model. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

looks just like my 57 450 ser.no.4508 S except it has a c281 engine otherwise idenical including the splined steering wheel

Matt: If I were selling that tractor I would call it a 450 with 264 engine. One item I notice is the hydraulic resovoir, looks closer to a 560 than a 400, and 450 would be same as 560. When I say closer, I guess I would need to see actual tractor to be sure.

On those casting codes I think you will find the whole system changed with the 130, 230, 350 and 450. The letter is not used anymore for the year. Not 100% certain on this but the codes on my 130 and 140 are an entirely different system. That alone should tell you what you have.

The letters were used for the codes on nearly all castings (not universal) up through at least 1985, and ITEC may still be using them.

Guy: I am not going to argue with you, however there is not the slightest sign on a letter in the casting codes of my 130 or 140. I waited until today in good daylight and used a knife and wire brush.

My Super A is serial number 336977 making it a 1953 and the engine block, torque tube, transmission case and touch control are all clearly marked X.

My Farmall 130 is serial number 9313 J making it a 1958 There is not the slightest resemblance of a C or a D on any of those codes.

My Farmall 140 is serial number 22157 J making it a 1963. Again there is not a sign of any letters. There are quite clearly numbers in these casting codes, and everyone of those numbers are legible. There was a discussion on here some time ago, and I do forget the title, but some of the participants suggested letters were not used beyond the 100, 200, 300 and 400. My two tractors not having letters I accepted this as being so.

I am 62 years of age still have 20-20 vission but do use reading glasses, for close up. I invite you to send anyone here to check this out. There are a couple of regular YT posters within 30 miles.

400/450 had a lot of little changes between them, speaking from a parts-man side of it, 400 was 6 volt with C264 gas engine and one armed fast hitch where the cyl mounted, was originally painted all red, first series of 450 was trimmed in white and still 6 volt, might have factory Power steering with Behlen type or made, newer type fast hitch like a 560, key switch had start/run all in one, last 450 made had C281 with 12 volt and key switch off/on with separate push button for starter like 460/560. I worked in set-up & delivery on these new before I was demoted to parts dept for 10 years.

Thanks, this tractor has a keyswitch that will start the tractor when turned (and doesn't have a seperate push button).

Look for the tractor casting code(as opposed to the engine casting code). Its located on right side in front of the brakes. It will have two numbers and a letter. The first number is the month of production, the second number is the day, and the letter is the year.Z=1954, A=1955, B=1956 etc etc...if your date and month is Z or A, its definitely a 400. If its B or C, its a 450 based on your serial #. The S after the serial# means it had TA and independent PTO. My guess is youve either got a 1955 400 or a 1957 450.

I looked for a number in front of the brake pedals and saw the number "358840-R1" I didn't notice anything else, other than a small set of numbers in that area that said "322" Does this help any? If not, I'll keep looking... Thanks again.

I like the way you've pictured the tractor "as is". Good selling strategy.

That tractor looks as though you have just unhooked the last implement. I like that.

Matt, there were some differences between the 400 and 450 other than the 264 vs. 281. The 450's had the new steering wheel, which I believe your picture shows. The 400 had the same steering wheel that the M/H series had. But if someone added power steering, they could have replaced the steering shaft/wheel. The 450's also had 12 volt systems, but many tractors have been converted to 12 volt. The other difference was in the fast hitch. Your picture doesn't look like your tractor has a FH. The FH on the 400/300 tractors did not fit the SMTA, the 450/350, or the 560/460 rear ends. You may have to find another 450 or a 400 and compare the rear end castings & bolt patterns. You may have a tractor that someone made out of two different tractors. If that is the case, you will have to get into casting numbers on the various parts of the tractor. That will take a lot of research. Good luck. I'm sure that there are others on this board that have some ideas.

The steering wheel is something that I replaced earlier this year. I found a new one with a splined shaft that fit, but isn't original. The tractor has an aftermarket 3pt hitch. Here's a picture of the other side of the tractor. I can upload more pictures if needed. Thanks again for your help, Matt

In the 450 pictures I have studied, the rear light was on the left side of the battery box. this picture shows it on the right which my 400 has, but this may not be a reliable clue. The splined steering shaft would tend to say it is a 450.
