TA on a 400

Last week I was able to buy a Farmall 400 at an auction for $900.00. It runs really good with no smoke and starts right away, and for the most part it is complete, short of light and enblems. It looks real rough from setting out in the weather. I was not able to drive it until I got it home. The TA works, but when you go from TA to direct drive, it does not lockup right away into direct drive when you release the lever foward. It acts like weak springs on a clutch pack or something. This tractor has set out in the weather most of its life and I did not know if water could have got in the TA or something. If it is water or rust in the TA, will use of the TA help the problem or make it worse? I have dads 400 and a 560 that I bought several years ago from a friends estate and they both lock up into direct drive right away when the lever is released foward. I have not been able to get this one to slip when you pull the lever back into TA. Any thought on this problem?

I plan to repaint it and put my dads IH 2ME picker on it for show. I hope to get it in the antique show at the 2004 Indiana State Fair this year and for our local parade in August. I am 45 years old and the last time that this picker was on dads 400 or any other tractor was when I was about 12 or 13 years old. It has been setting in the shed all this time. I will post pictures of before and after as soon as I get it painted.
I need to find a good set of 38" used tires to put on it that are in good enough shape to hold the weight of the picker. I am not able to buy new ones [$$$$]. The ones that are on it now are weather checked really bad and I don't think they will hold the weight of the picker for any length of time. I did not know if anyone had a set laying around that they would sell or where I could find a good set in Indiana for reasonable money. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks.

I have a 400, looks real nice from another guy i baught it from, and low side of TA didn't work, and throw out bearing was completely out. So i tore it out, and did a trade in deal with a dealership, where you take the old TA assembly in, and you buy the new rebuilt one for around $800 or so, but the TA clutch is just like the engine clutch except smaller. If you do have to replace the clutch, you might as well do the whole thing because the shaft wich the plate slides on is usually realy wore on the splined shaft. And it doesn't hurt anything doing the whole thing considering you only take 4 bolts out on the rear and pull it out once the clutch is taken apart. Have any questions, just E-mail me at Jeffg245@hotmai.com

For the TA, the first thing I would do is drain the oil from the tranny. I'm sure it's very nasty and may take days to completely ooze outt. Get a IT or owner's manual and verify TA adjustments.

For tne tires, you might get a dealer to do a search for you for some decent take-offs.

I'm currently in the middle of a total rework of my 400.
