i know that farmall changed colors on Nov.1,1936.
does anyone know the breakdown of the serial numbers to determine if your '36 is a pre-Nov.
model? i have a '36 F12 (FS65032)which most of which appeared red....i am looking at an F30 that is also a '36...very popular year...(forget the exact ##)
i just want to be sure it is a post Nov.1st model.
i want to complete the '36 line up.....in RED.
thank for your help.
Luke

I have a 36 F-12 that showed no signs of gray when I stripped it for painting so it got painted red. Got another 36 that definitely has gray under the red. It will get a couple of coats of gray paint.

thanks for all of the insight.....
if i understand this correctly..... all '36 should still be gray..... '37's should then be red??
is this right.?
i may have painted my F12 incorrectly....too pretty to change her now.
thanks again.

According to an article in Red Power a couple of years ago, the first red F-12 was #FS-81837 and the first red F-30 was # FB-19064.

As I understand it, the factory fiscal year started Nov first, so any tractor built on that date in 36 or until oct 31 37,would be a 37. So if your serial number show it to be a 36 then it should be grey. If it were built after nov first, it would be a 37. If I am wrong, Guy Fay will correct me.

I think you've got it right for the F-20s. I did a Red Power article that gave the PROBABLE first serial numbers of red tractors, since curiously, IH didn't always use the fiscal year as the serial year at that time-it was pretty flaky in the 1930s.

Just for reference (as everyone knows that IH 2150 is the best red spray paint)...what to use for a grey match. The closest I have come to an original shade of gray in a commerically available spray paint is PLastikote 1006 Dark Gray. I buy it in autoparts stores (NAPA, etc). Great for those little touchup jobs (or entire tractors as I did!) -Zak-

Van Sickle Paint in Lincoln, Nebraska make a McCormick-Deering Gray. It can be ordered in gallons and they will put a gallon in spray cans (14 cans) also.
