Super M reservoir and live hydraulic pump for M

I just got front plate, cover, gears and dist pump off a SM for my early M and the under tank reservoir, rod & clamp came with it (no aux valve). My plan is to ad 3pt hitch with 2 way now and a loader later.
1st question: What do you gain with the under tank reservoir over using the belly pump reservor? Is the releaf valve in the reservoir with the primary controle? Can both reservoirs be tied together to better supply the loader?(I can get a seat & bat box off a 400 cheap)
2nd question: Will a 4-way "christmas tree" valve off a SM, SMTA operate a 3pt hitch with 2 way hyd and a loader with hyd bucket? Are all aux valves from SM & SMTAs 4 way? Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for the info, do you by chance know the volume of SM reservoir? I have M & MD books, but no SM etc reference.

This is a very good, unrestored, weekend working tractor so I think I'll plumb for future growth and go with 3 or 4 spools. I guess the open center means fluid flows through it to next spool if it is not in front or back position? (My dad built feed mills and used hydraulics to controle everything not electric, I sure wish I could ask him stuff now)

Do you know why the IHC SM remote valve is 4-way with only 1 lever? I am sure I'm getting spools & ways mixed up as I am trying to digest tractor hydraulics. Thanks again.

spool is where the lever is at, 2 levers = 2 spools

3 way = pressure in one direction (usually up)

4 way = pressure in 2 directions (up and down)

I have a Super M with live hydraulics running a loader with 1 way cylinders and a 2 way cylinder on the bucket, a 3 point with 2 way cylinders and I'd like to have an extra set of outlets. It has a 2 spool valve that I've hooked up the loader/bucket to. I've found there just isn't enough reservoir capacity for everything I want to run.

What my plans are is to add a 2 spool valve with "power beyond" for the loader/bucket. Then go in line to the other 2 spools to run the 3 point and extra outlets. I'm going to take the factory reservoir off and have a welding shop make me a new tank that will go up to the sediment bulb and overhang slightly on the sides. A filter will be put in somewhere too. This should bump me up from 7 quarts to 3-4 gallons hopefully.

The only benefit I can think of is that the hyd level is always above the pump with the under tank reservoir, so I would think that system would be easier to keep primed than the reservoir in the belly pump, but I know those work too. And I don't see why you couldn't series the two together to get more capacity, I'd run the outlet from the under tank reservoir to the fill for the belly pump, and then take a line from the drain under the belly pump as your return to the pump. You might want to dril and tap a larger hole for that return though as I think they are typically a 1" diameter hose and the drain woln't be that big.

I get away with an aftermarket (ie:cross/prince) 2 spool valve, 1 spool for 3 pnt, 2nd with quick connect couplers for remote or loader bucket, they I use the factory 1 way valve in the reservoir for the main lift cylinders on the loader (lift only). That works if you don't mind the controls being in different places which is fine for hobby use, but would be terrible on a machine you worked full time.

That said, I'd recommend you get a 3 or 4 spool open center valve and mount it convienient to you (like on the seat box). Two spools could operate the loader, one for the 3 pnt and optionally a 4th for a remote connection out back. Run it in series with the pump and reservoir. ie: take the pressure line from the pump to the inlet on the valve, outlet from valve to the inlet on the reservoir. One exception would be if you are adding PS for the loader. Then you would need a priority flow divider between the pump and the valve inlet, with the PS return going to the reservoir.

You bring a thought to my mind. I have a M with a charr lynn ps unit. it also has a loader w\m&w live hyd.pump on the dist. drive. This weekend my ps pump locked up. instead of mounting a auto ps pump some kind of way, is it difficult to hold the ps up the hyd. system? will it take away any hyd pressure or bother the loader in any way? where would i be able to find a prioity flow divider?

Thanks Mike
