This is for Bob a couple of days ago I posted a message asking about changing from a mag to a dist.You told me how to do it I decided to use the mag as a dist. if that don't work I can find a dist.I did as you told me and every thing checked out except I still don't have any fire.You gave me a hint that was good except I had already taken the little plate off and removed the small gears I'm now thinking it isn't in time.Do you know if there is a procedure for timing the small gears or do I try trial and error.The manual I bought doesn't mention them.I suppose that means you aren't to mess with them.The book says when you time the mag to retard the mag then line up the timing marks,then advance the mag until the impluse coupling snaps the way it is now it snaps with it fully retarded.So I guess the rotor isn't in time with the points.Also I removed the coupling from the mag that hooks up with the tractor do you know if that has to be timed too.I thought I got it back where it was but maybe not.Also some one has had it apart not to long ago from the looks of it so it may not have been right when I started.Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated

Farmer Bob has given you good info on timing the little gears, and timing the mag back on the tractor.

Just to clarify... if you make a 12 Volt ignition system from a mag in this manner, you need to keep the impulse coupling functional. When the impulse is snapping at cranking speed, the spark occurs at, or slightly after TDC. When the engine starts and speeds up, the impulse locks out, and the timing jumps to around 30 degrees.

You should be able to time this unit following Farmer Bob's instructions, as the procedure would be the same as timing the original magneto.

If you cannot get a spark out of it, email me direct.

P.S. to my previous post...

Even with the little gears that drive the rotor out of time, should should get a good spark out of your new 12 Volt coil when you turn the engine over. Do you have a spark from your coil?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you,I've been out driving my new tractor.ha
When I started this morning I took it all apart again.and timed it as per Farmer Bob,I had the small gears off three teeth.While I had it off I took the points apart and dressed them they didn't look bad.I put every thing back together and finished timing as your instructions.I also cleaned up all the grounds.I had checked them with a meter, this time I took them apart and sanded them.When I turned the key on I had spark at the coil hy tension wire.I put the plug back in turned the gas on .It turned over twice and fired it missed a couple of times then smoothed out and ran fine.Now it starts as soon as the starter hits.
A little history on the tractor .It had been stored for fifteen years and hadn't been started in that time.It was in a good building.They had drove it in .Some one had tried to start it not to long ago,you could tell by the bolts that it had been apart not to long ago.
The tractor doesn't belong to me The boy who owns it inherited it and needed a place to keep it .Its a friend of my boy who told him we had plenty of room.
I walked by it every day and kept thinking it should run.I bought a manual,flushed the gas tank,changed the oil,and changed the plugs .When I found that I had no spark I decided to try the internet.Good choice.I might have got there eventually but it would have taken me a long time and been a whole lot more exspensive.With every thing I had to buy including the manual and a battery I won't have a hundred dollars in it.Which is good since it isn't even my tractor. I really do appreciate your help.

I've had a lot of people turn up their noses at the idea of converting a mag to battery ignition. It is not for everyone, but if it gets the machine running, to me that is better than the machine being disabled because someone could not afford to fix the mag, or buy a distributor. No harm is done to the mag, should someone want to make it original again.

Hope you guys have fun with the tractor.

John,
If you are working with an H-4 Mag behind that plate you removed you line up the distributor spindle's letter (R) with the camphored tooth on the pinion gear below it as this is a clockwise rotating mag. (You would line up the (L) with the camphored tooth for a counterclockwise rotating mag). If you set the rotor on the spindle at this point the contact on the rotor should be pointing at approx the 2 o'clock position and the drive lug on the other end of the mag should be cattycorner or about 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock direction.
Ensure the engine is at #1 TDC on compression stroke by lining up the mark on the flywheel that says D/C with 1-4 under it with the mark on the flywheel cover looking through the inspection hole in the bottom of the bell housing. And, remove the front spark plug and put your finger or thumb over the hole and rotate the engine until you feel air coming out. This means the #1 pistion is coming up to TDC on compression stroke. Using a light look into the hole and stop rotating engine when piston gets to the very top of the stroke. Now install the mags drive lug into the slot in the mag housing and install the mounting bolts. Tighten them thumb tight. Push the top of the mag towards the engine. Rotate the engine almost two complete revolutions of the hand crank and feel again for air coming out of #1 plug hole. Watch with a light for the #1 piston to reach the very top of the stroke and stop rotating when it is at TDC. Now pull the top of the mag out towards you or away from the engine block just until you hear the impulse trip. Tighten the mounting bolts up. The rotor contact should be pointing at about the 2 o'clock position, install the #1 plug, mount the dist cap and install the wires from the cap to the spark plugs, starting with the post of the cap corresponding to the rotor contact as #1 to #1 (front)plug and then moving clockwise around the cap the next wire to #3 plug, then #4 plug and last #2 plug. Hook up the coil wire to the center post on the dist. cap and try it. It should be close enough to make it run. You can play with the mag to fine tune it but you may be right on. Hope this helps.
