I am thinking of looking at a farmall H after selling my 8n.my question is the horsepower looks almost the same for these tractors.I will be using it for plowing snow, plowing the ground, moving dirt and horse manure.maybe pulling a wagon or two.is the H good enough or should I look at an M?

First would suggest you dont sell the 8N.

I have both a H and and an 8n - and use both and enjoy both equally. The N for me does a great job of mowing, especially hillsides where I would not want to take the tricycle setup on the H - plus the added height of the H does not sit well with me in those areas. (Funny how I notice the dips and ant hills more on the H. Plus with the loader on the N and weighted tires feel a little more secure.)

The N also has a loader that I can use for light use and plowing snow. If I had loader on the H I would be concerned about possible tipping.

The H is great for larger field work such as raking hay and plowing - plus moving wagons around.

Buy the H, you will have the best of both worlds and enjoy each just as much. Also remember you can get into places with lower clearance with the N.

Just my thoughts. 46 H and 48 8N Jim

After all is said and done, you are trying to compare apples to oranges; they each have/had their place. They are both good tractors but different tractors and the trick is to get the one best suited to you needs. The H is good for straight drawbar pulling work whereas the 8N, because of the 3 pt. hitch, can be handier than a pocket on a shirt. I don't see how anyone can just out and out down one of these tractors and say the other is better. And don't let my name (Dave 2N)lead you to beleive I am biased; I have a 2N, an 8N, a Super C, a Super H and a Super M and I like them all. I grew up on my granfather's 2N and my uncle's Farmall M so have had plenty of experience with both. The only thing I would say about an H is that there is a world of difference between an H and a Super H and an M and a Super M.

Carl, I've driven an H, M, & and a Ford 860 which is a little bigger than an 8N. H is the most comfortable to drive, and probably the most manuverable. The only thing a Ford has going for it is the 3pt. But if you want, you can get 3pt kits for an H or M.

As far as working ground, it all depends on how much you have to do. The H will pull an 8' disc ok, the M doesn't really know it's there. I'd guess an 8footer would make an N series stod dead in it's tracks. They never could seem to ge the tractoin as the farmalls. And if you want to use a 3bottom blow, forget it with an N series. get an M. Dad said he could plow with the M & 2x14 in 4th & the tractor wasn't working hard.

Besides, every yuppie that get's a little ground has an N series ford.

Carl: Both the 8N and the H are good tractors. Close to a million owners couldn't be wrong. The 8N sold close to 600,000 and the H 400,000, making them number 1 and 2 in all time tractor sales. Coming out of the dirty thirties and WW#2 the 8N became the first motorized vehicle many farm families owned. They in many cases had been one horse farms. I can remember seeing them on way to town with mamma and kids on that platform carrier on three point. They were more popular than a SA as they would haul more drawbar weight. Not that mamma was so heavy but who knew when another was on the way, then there was the feed supplies and groceries.

The H on the other hand was an acerage production tractor. Had the weight and traction to do some serious farming. In the early 40s H was the big IH seller, going into the 50s the M took over. Earlier many farmers thought the M was just too large.

I made a comment one day last week in forums and MF guy was wondering if he should go Farmall. I suggested that most of the 6 cylinder diesel Farmalls had the ability to go 10,000 hours to the first engine rebuild, with good maintainance. He shot back saying his MF 175 allready had 12,000 hours and going strong. What he didn't and probably still doesn't realize is the MF chassis didn't have enough weight to wear out any engine.

You have the same thing right within the Farmall line. The C, SC, 200 and 230 chassis were much harder on the C-113 and C-123 engines than were the A, SA, 100 and 130. Probably on mass those engines did the same amount of work in either application. Most tractors had a good use in what they were designed for.

I asked a hired hand on a neighboring farm on day what the MF 135 was good for. His responce," raking hay and rounding up cows." I said," what about 165", he said," just bigger cows".

My grandfather replaced Rover and Prince with an N and an H. Farmed two farms and fed a family with them. Dairy/hay/wheat, Etc. I never heard him complain.

Each had their duties, and they seemed to compliment each other. He seemed to use the N for utility work and some plowing, and the H for baling and plowing. The N in his later years was his on the farm transportation.

My dad and I have a 49 8N and I have a 52 H. Neither was Gramps, but I think I can do most anything we would want to do. If we were a large commercial farm I would want something bigger, obviously.

I want to buy an M to pull with mainly. It's kinda big for a lot of applications. But I doubt I will ever own one..... If you can afford it, and can take care of them, Keep them both. IMHO.

This isn't really answering your question but I think the H is a much better tractor. When I was growing up back in the 50's the only way you could plow with an 8N was with a mounted plow and then only if you went very shallow with it. When one of our neighbors tried to pull our 2-16 JD plow that dad pulled in 4th gear with his 49 H and all he could do was spin the wheels. After a little while he came back and got the H to finish the job. I think he traded the 8N for a new 350 later. Most farmers around here thought the Fords were kind of a joke when it came came to any serious field work.

First off, why sell the Ford? For what you say you are going to use it for is almost an exact job decription of what an 8N does good. Sure the H will perform good for all these jobs too. Actually better for most of the jobs than a M. An M is bigger and harder to manuever. One thing I believe you will miss from the 8N is the 3 point hitch. Also the wide front. The H is a heck of a tractor though and is a good worker. Just to let you know I own both a H and an 8N.

In the 50's I drove both of these tractors in the same field pulling a 6 foot tandem disk. Also cultivated with it. The 8N is by far the worst tractor I have ever driven. I remember begging my Dad to let me put the front-mounted cutivator on the H, instead of using that awful rear-mount Ford. Was doing close cultivation of vegetables, or at least trying to. There is NO comparison, the H has far more power. The only thing an 8N has going for it is the 3 point, a decided advantage if you change implements a lot, and you can get one for the H. Although, the 8N is better for yard work and close quarters. Horsepower ratings are immaterial, it is the power to weight ratio that counts, excellent in the H, the 8N is too light and overgeared (too fast). As to the M, it is maybe 1000 lbs heavier than the H, about 9 more hp, and is a 3 plow tractor, the H is a 2 plow. It sounds like you are doing light duty work, so the H should be fine.

When I was growning up those that could afford it had a H, those who were a little less well off had a N (the rich guy had a JD). To me a H is a little more comfortable to operate and I can see better. N has the advantage of the 3 point. I think this is one of those cases where personal preference is the deciding factor. Red Power for me, not a red belly but to each his own.
