We have a Farmall H that won't stay in 4th gear. What is the cause of this and will it have to be broken down to fix? Or can it be fixed from the top?

Describe what happens when it kicks out of 4th.. Does it make any noise, or just kick out?? If makes a chattering noise, you will probably have to replace the main shaft & gear, as the splining on the shaft and the mating protion of the gear are shot. If it just pops out, probably a broken detent spring and or a flattened detent ball. Just a recomendation, if you have to replace the main shaft & gear, replace the bearings also, as they are probably shot(reason for the wear), and if the detent spring & ball are the problem replace all of them just for piece of mind. Oh one other thing is if the shaft gear are bad, the shift fork is probably shot also..
