I always bragged that I never have trouble with gas going bad. oops, now I bought a running tractor that has sat for several years and no, it does not run. What do you guys use to free up the tar? I have never had much luck with commercial carb cleaners cutting that stuff.

Gas Tank Scummy? See if you can withdraw some of that scummy concentrate with a length of wood stick out of the gas tank.
Get some acetone from your local hardware store.
Place 2 or 3 ounces in a clean bowl. Introduce
the gas scum from the end of your sampling stick into the acetone bowl. If it loosens up or dissolves the dastardly scum you may have a good gas tank cleaning solution.
Discharge any scum/dirt laden acetone solution into an evaporating container(like a galvaized wash tub). Be careful with sparks, open flame or
cigarettes anywhere near the gasoline or acetone
of this cleaning operation. Have an extinguisher
handy during this cleaning period. Good luck and work safely.

I haven't worked on a carburetor yet that didn't clean up with something like NAPA or MACS carb. cleaner, and I have seen some very nasty ones. The trick is to completely disassemble the carb. and soak it overnight in the cleaner, then rinse the carb. parts with HOT water, and blow dry with compressed air. This procedure has never failed.
If the gas tank itself needs a good cleaning, muriatic acid will do the trick. It's the most effective and least expensive way I have found. Also the easiest and quickest.

We have six farmalls all were restored 15 years ago. they sat out at grandpas for six years not running, almost all of them had a full fuel tank. The m is alright the a and bn have crap in the tank the super 6 is seized up the f-20 is alright because it ran a few times a year and the h, know that was the worst tank ihave ever seen, we brought it to get boiled 2 times, that took some paint off, then we got en estiment on how much it woul be to get it sand blasted, that was only 500 bucks, so we justgot another tank.

I haven't ever had a problem -- but they only sit for several months, not years, perhaps a year at the most. Rather than drain everything, I just add 3-4 gallons of fresh gas, and it starts. I do keep enough gas in the tank to keep it from all evaporating, though. The only problem I ever had was in the so-called good gas days -- In the 50's I had a motorcycle with a near empty tank that I let sit for maybe 6 months -- turned to crud. SO, I think today's gas is BETTER than the 50 years ago stuff.

My observation is the cr@p gasoline the oil companies are overcharging us for today goes bad a lot quicker than it did just a few years ago. Anyway...

To cut varnish etc. inside old carburetors I've had good luck with oven cleaner - like Easy Off or similar. And for REALLY gummed up parts methylene chloride (either straight if you can get it, or as Zip Strip paint remover) works great. Just make sure there's no plastic or rubber parts because it will dissolve them along with the varnish.

The usual safety precautions apply: Wear eye protection, protect your skin and use only in a well-ventilated area!

i feel this garbage the refineries are putting out can be related to the lead.as they've slowly taken it out the gas goes bad quicker.just this past summer got my motorcycle out and filled the tank and did a little riding this was back in the begining of may and back in the middle sep went to ride it and would'nt start thought maybe out of gas and pulled the cap and it about knocked me over it stunk so bad,so drained it and refilled and it fired right up.if ya think about it years ago they never had this fuel stabilizer hum! whats up with that.
