Have a 49 I-6 with a cab. Can't get it into 5th gear. Pulled the cover and it looks like part of the gear has been machined away. In 5th, one gear looks like it goes inside the other .About half of the one that goes on the inside has been milled away. Its not ground away, like the gears grinding together, but machined, nice and neat.It looks like it was put on a lathe. The outer gear is perfect, so they haven't been grinding together. The tractor originally had a snow plow attached, and was part of a fleet probably belonging to a municipality. Any of you guys ever hear of this being done???

On the H and M type transmissions (The I-6 will be similar) the 4th and 5th sliding gear has two sets of teeth. One is on the outside, the other on the inside. The one on the inside is the 5th gear. The one on the outside is 4th gear. When in 4th gear, it meshes with a gear on the countershaft to drive the tractor. When in 5th gear, the inside teeth mesh directly into the driving gear making 5th gear turn the shaft that goes to the differential the same speed as the input shaft. Most likely what has happen to your tractor is that it has been shifted into 5th gear on the go(grinding the teeth) so many times that it as worn out those inside teeth. It just looks like it has been machined. Apparently those inside teeth are softer than the ones on the driving gear, so that the ones on the sliding gear are the ones that wear out. You'll have to have a new 4th and 5th speed sliding gear. I know on the W-4, the 4/5th gear is different than on the H, may be true on the I and W-6 too. If so, the gear will be hard to find and you may have to change enough gears out so that the M gears will work.

I have heard of similar things done to fleet trucks and tractors, most of the time the highest gear is blocked off to prevent the workers from operating the vehicles at high speed when carying large or unstable loads, But this is the first time i have heard of someone blocking a gear in a plow tractor.

I've seen the plow that was hooked to this tractor, and it is a pretty unwieldly beast.Maybe this was done for the same reason.
